Looks like Terry & The Pirates is being a super-deluxe treatment...

Someone on another board saw some Alex Raymond original art up close and took some shots. It's insane how tight this is even when zoomed in.

That kind of hand control and finesse with a brush just can't be taught. I can't even get super tight rendering lines with a micron. I have clumsy, oafish hands with hair on the fingers.

Alex Raymond was renowned for his hairless fingers. People flocked to see them from around the world.

Moved into a new house a month or two ago and am setting up the office / nerd cave at a snail's pace... got most of the comic strip books out, though not all of them (the Golden Age Superman ones, Star Wars v3, and an oversized Hal Foster Tarzan are still to be unpacked, probably in storage still).

Missing the EYE of your Popeye collection there. I have them all, and the best was coming up IMO. How's that Russ Manning Tarzan collection? I've considered that before but wasn't sure if I'd care for the format of the daily strip for Tarzan, with long adventures and lots of recap.

It's probably my favorite comic book / strip interpretation of Tarzan, I really love it -- but the books are OOP and can be quite pricey these days. I got in when they were in-print and being discounted by several sellers.

Congratulations on both house and collection!

I have a couple of those items. Can only drool over others.

Those look nice. I've never read more than a handful of Mandrake strips at a time, but it's always intrigued me. I figure Ditko based the appearance of Dr. Strange on him.

I guess I had always thought Strange was based upon Chandu the Magician, with a big nod to Vincent Price
(who had appeared in The Raven a few months before Strange Tales #110). Marvel even eventually let on that
Stephen Strange's middle name was Vincent.

I know that Stan Lee's take on the character was based on Chandu, but even Stan admitted that Steve Ditko created the character and penciled the story before he showed it to Stan. Stan admitted to just dialoguing the tale. And Marvel adding later on that Strange's middle name was Vincent wouldn't mean that Ditko intended the resemblance to Price. (Though he may very well have). Price was already a well known celebrity prior to the Raven.

Meanwhile, Mandrake himself was based on Canadian magician Leon Mandrake…

The Prince Valiant Studio Edition has to be the apex of the "artist edition" type format. Other books and barbarian figures included for scale…

What’s amazing is that as big as this book is, we’re still not seeing the art at full size — it includes a poster reproduction of a single page which I have to assume is the actual size of the original art — which feels around 30-35% larger than the book!

And a few randomly selected close-ups of panels. It's amazing that he was putting this kind of detail into artwork which would be printed onto newsprint... I guess he didn't care, he did it over several decades. But man, I can't imagine the grind of putting out this strip every week for... cripes, how long did he do it? Four decades, more of less? Man.
