I don't know if there are many 'Firefly' fans here, but I just found out that the release date for the movie version, 'Serenity', has been pushed back to September.
Here is the scoop from the man himself, Joss Whedon:

If you didn't catch the show originally, try and rent the series (now available on a very cool DVD collection). When it first came out, I completely missed it - the premise didn't sound too interesting or something (maybe with Farscape and other similar stuff out I was getting sci-fi'ed to death or something), so I just never caught it.
A few months ago, I just happened to catch an episode on the Space channel, and thought it was amazing! Then, I found a friend of mine owned the DVD set, so I borrowed it and watched the whole series in about three days. Just incredible stuff. Best Adam Baldwin work ever!
I'm curious - what do other IMWANners think of the show?

I only saw a couple of episodes. What I saw seemed better than most of the junk on television.
I seem to recall a discussion about the first episode ( which I missed. ) Fox had apparently cut the pilot episode down to an hour from it's original two-hour length. After it had been announced that the series was to be canceled, Fox ran the episode in its two-hour entirety ( which I again missed. )
Others had said the series made a lot more sense after having seen the two-hour pilot.
The only real problem I had with the series was the on-board hooker ... ( every spaceship should have one, right ... to carry social diseases across the cosmos ... ) She seemed to be the equivalent of "shock-value" ... as in "Who d'ya suppose the hooker's gonna do this week?"
I may go out and rent the DVD set to catch up on the series, but I plan to see the film if the trailers look decent.

Fox wanted a different episode to show first, and gave the writers two days (!) to come up with a script. So, they wrote 'Train Job', and that became the first episode/semi-pilot (it recapped a lot of info from the pilot). Then later, yeah, they showed the pilot. Which, when watched, does make the series make more sense... Quote: The only real problem I had with the series was the on-board hooker ... ...I was never too sure about the space hooker character...I guess that just fit into one of the Western-style archetypes (preacher, gunman, civilized doctor, stuff like that.)
Funny that there was no Cheaplaughs Johnson type character...although Jayne sometimes qualified, especially when wearing his 'cunning' hat

Being a fan of Buffy and Angel, there was no way I was missing Firefox. I caught all but one of the original air dates and was impressed by the show. Any show with an ounce of intelligence is going to stand out; given the competition. I was disappointed to hear that Fox had canceled the show. I only watch 3 or 4 things on tv; so losing 1 is a big deal.
Anyway, I didn't think much about it until a friend mentioned that he'd got the series DVD and want to know if I'd like to borrow it. Wow. I was doubly impressed on the second viewing. Got a much better view of the big picture the second time around. Fox really had something here. I think this could have become another X-Files for them. I got the feeling that Fox had very little confidence in the show, and it was certainly losing money, but given a better time slot and a little time, more people would have found this show and it would have been a 'hit'. (Unless I overestimate the intelligence of the tv viewing audience.)
One thing I found mildly irritating the first time around; Space Hooker, I found EXTREMELY irritating upon the second viewing. Apparently getting laid is so rare in the future that only the best and brightest can rise to the ranks of SPACE HOOKER!!!!!
I guess Whedon was going somewhere with the character. Upon second viewing the concept really came off as a rotten apple in an otherwise pristine bushel of gems.
BTW, I'm actually more enthused about the Serenity movie then the next Star Wars (III/VI The dog to end all dogs) movie.

Bought the Firefly boxset a week ago for $20 (and Serenity for $10) and I've been watching it steadily (not through em yet). Absolutely fantastic stuff. Seems to get better as it goes.
I'm okay with the Companion character... and I think Ian was right in that she is the Western archetype of a saloon girl je pense. She's also very easy on the eyes.
I really think the theme song killed this show.

I rewatch the Firefly box set about once every two or three months. Love it.

You know, when I first started watching the show, I hated the theme song. Now it's an integral part of each episode to me, and I love it.
Go figure.

I think it was probably an audience killer.
