Joni Mitchell was at a turning point 50 years ago. After making four acclaimed albums with Reprise Records, including her 1971 masterpiece Blue, she left the label to join the brand-new Asylum Records in 1972. Over the next seven years, Mitchell would record some of the most acclaimed music of her career while changing her musical direction by adding more jazz elements into her songwriting. The evolution culminated in 1979 with Mingus, her collaboration with jazz titan Charles Mingus, and her last studio album for Asylum.

Rhino explores the beginning of that prolific era with THE ASYLUM ALBUMS (1972-1975), the next installment in the Joni Mitchell Archives series. The collection features newly remastered versions of For The Roses (1972), Court And Spark (1974), the double live album Miles Of Aisles (1974), and The Hissing Of Summer Lawns (1975). All four were recently remastered by Bernie Grundman.

The cover art for THE ASYLUM ALBUMS (1972-1975) features a previously unseen painting by Mitchell. The set also includes an essay by friend and fellow Canadian Neil Young. He writes: “Joni’s music is so deep and transporting. She comes right from the source. There is no mistaking it…For The Roses, Court And Spark, Miles Of Aisles, and The Hissing Of Summer Lawns…are all classics in my book. I listened to every album as it came out. The musicians she played with were always above my abilities. She had grown from folk to jazz and in between, creating a unique kind of sound that I loved to listen to over and over.”

THE ASYLUM ALBUMS (1972-1975) follows Mitchell’s musical evolution over four albums as she embraced more jazz-inspired pieces and moved away from the folk and pop of her early years. It includes essential tracks like her first Top 40 hit, “You Turn Me On, I’m A Radio,” and her highest-charting (#7) single “Help Me,” plus favorites like “Free Man In Paris,” “Raised On Robbery” and “In France They Kiss On Main Street.”

For The Roses, released 50 years ago this November, was certified gold and added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry in 2007. Court And Spark topped the U.S. album chart and was certified double platinum, making it the best-selling album of Mitchell’s career. It was nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and won Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist for “Down To You.”

Miles Of Aisles is a double live album that spotlights the tour for Court And Spark. It reached #2 on the album chart and was certified gold. The Hissing Of Summer Lawns was certified gold as well, peaking at #4 on the album chart and earning a Grammy® Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

The new collection heralds the upcoming release of JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES VOL. 3, which will arrive next year. It will be the third installment in the comprehensive archival series exploring different eras of Mitchell’s celebrated career through unreleased studio and live recordings. VOL. 3 will focus on the timeframe when she recorded the albums included in THE ASYLUM ALBUMS (1972-1975).

Mitchell continues to be intimately involved in producing these collections, lending her vision and personal touch to every element of the projects. Future releases in the archive series will arrive in a similar manner, with a boxed set focused on studio albums from a specific era, followed by an official “Archives” release looking at unreleased audio from the same period.

This is the period where I loved every Joni Mitchell album going forward. I am really anticipating the release of Archives Vol. 3 even more and what they may contain. I have all of the albums contained in "The Asylum Albums: 1972-1975" 4CD box set, but I may get this set if it hits a good price.

I bit and this set came in the mail today. At 10 bucks a pop for a CD, I figured why not. The mini LP replicas are a nice touch with the raised, embossed design of Court and Spark and The Hissing Of Summer Lawns. I challenge anyone to read the lyrics on the album jackets without a good magnifying glass. :lol:

I've only played Miles Of Aisles so far. The sound is very good to me. I can't say it's any better than the older HDCD that was released years back, which was a lot better than the original CD I got when they first came out.

"The Hissing" disc in my first set was loaded with errors and skipped. The second one I got did the same. All the other discs in the set played fine. I'm waiting on a third set.

Ut oh. I better get to playing Hissing. It's a favorite of mine.

All is fine with my Hissing CD. Unfortunately, I was just reading there were also some problems with the Court and Spark CD. Someone asked on twitter "what’s happening about Court & Spark and The Same Situation being repeated? Will Rhino issue a replacement disc? Do I return the whole box to Amazon?" I better listen to Court and Spark and For The Roses.

Edit #2 - I just put my Court and Spark CD in my computer drive. Yes I see that track 4 People's Parties clocks in at 5:16 because People's Parties and Same Situation are combined on track 4. Then Same Situation repeats for track 5, which it is supposed to be track 5. I wonder what the best option is to get a replacement? I better check For The Roses real quick too.

My HISSING seems fine but I also have the repeated track on COURT & SPARK. Rhino will probably offer replacement disc(s).

I have a feeling that sending it back to Amazon will just result in receiving another set with the same error. I think the COURT disc needs to be re-pressed by Rhino. In a few days there will probably be
some statement from Rhino about getting a replacement disc.

I pre-ordered the set on Amazon Canada, but they haven't shipped yet. I'm hoping they just wait for new sets and ship them instead. It's not like I am in any hurry to get these, I already have the original vinyl and the HDCD CDs.

I hope they let us know something soon. I tried contacting Rhino and didn't receive an answer. I guess I'll hold off returning the set to Amazon. I am sure they won't have any newly pressed ones at this point.

I just heard from Rhino on twitter. They said "this is the first we are hearing of this. What's the issue?" So I told them the issue of the combined tracks. I noticed even the digital tracks on Amazon are wrong too. Track 4. People's Parties and Same Situation combo is 5:16. Then track 5. Same Situation repeats, just like the CD does. Stay tuned I guess.

Edit: They have already answered with this:
"Interesting. Thank you for letting us know! We will take this to the appropriate parties in the AM. We will be in touch with an update ASAP. Feel free to remind us!"

They don't have to worry I will remind them.

Just heard again from Rhino via twitter. Here's what they said:
"Thank you again for bringing this to our attention! The situation is currently being addressed, and should be rectified sooner than later. Let's please stay in touch so we can get you a correct CD."
My reply to them was - Yes, please advise the process for receiving a corrected CD. I have some friends that made the purchase from Amazon that would like to know as well.
