Description
"Songs For While I'm Away" is the story of how a young black boy from working class 1950's Dublin became Ireland's greatest rock star. As lead singer of Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott was a songwriter, a poet, a dreamer, and a wild man. The film gets to the heart of Philip: the father, the husband, the friend, the son, the rock icon, the poet, & the dreamer. Also included is Thin Lizzy's famed October '78 concert at the Sydney Opera House, featuring remixed audio and cleaned-up picture.

Finally!

I wasn’t paying to stream the documentary and it’s finally on the way.

The Australia show had very muffled audio, so I hope they did their best with it.

That show has a lineup of Lynott, Moore, Gorham and Nauseef and was killer.

The video was missing a number of songs, but I doubt they found those.

From the May 5 announcement:

The new version of The Boys Are Back In Town Live film presents the show in the highest quality that has been made available, with not only cleaned up video and remixed audio from multi tracks, but five additional songs from this set that have never been officially released (“Warriors,” “Don’t Believe a Word,” “Still in Love With You,” “Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed” and “Suicide”).

My understanding is that this is not just a remix of the previous tapes- this is from a broadcast quality tape of the full show which was acquired from an ex Channel 7 employee.

Absolutely- with Robbo in 1976, and 1977 (on my birthday- what a night!), and in 1978 with Gary Moore.

Well, what was it like (Robo years)?

Every bit as amazing as you would expect, though there was definitely a progression from 76 to 77. In 76 you got the sense that they were still a bit more raw and new to that level of touring, but by 77 as headliners performance-wise they were incredibly tight and everyone was on top of their game. Whenever the Tony Visconti comments about “Live and Dangerous” come up, I always laugh because at that point the raw live tapes are almost as good as the album. The Live and Dangerous video is good, but really nothing I’ve seen does full justice to just how visually powerful that line up was on stage .

As much as I admire Gary Moore, it wasn’t quite the same vibe live- obviously still great playing, but Gary’s jumping around stage antics didn’t quite gel visually with Phil and Scott’s coolness factor the way Robbo did. I got the sense that even though Gary was in the band, he was still somewhat separate from the team, if that makes sense.

Here’s that preview: “Bad Reputation” from the upcoming release- looks and sounds far superior to any previous version- really excited for this!

This is great news.

I was too young to see Lizzy, even though they are my favorite band.

I saw the post-Lynott Lizzy several times and felt empty each time.

I saw them twice as an opener (for Deep Purple and later Guns ‘N’ Roses) and twice as a headliner in 2001 and 2011.

We wanted to hear the songs live again and it was worth it, but only mildly entertaining.

The 2011 show with Warwick was actually pretty good and with Gorham, Downey and Wharton was fairly legit.

Even so, I felt nothing.

There’s only one Phil.

And he was THE original member of that band.

I find it sad when bands carry on without certain members, such as the situation with Phil. He created TL.

Midge joined the band during the Black Rose tour in 1979 while the band were touring the US with Journey.

His first gig was in New Orleans.

For the next leg of the tour in late 1979, they added Dave Flett formerly of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and Midge moved to keyboards.

I interviewed Flett about his time in the band for my book.

In 1980 they replaced Flett with Snowy White and Midge did one more tour of Ireland before telling Phil he had to get back to Ultravox, who were soon to soar in popularity.

I’ve never seen any video of Midge with the band, but plenty of photos.

I ordered the movie and it should be here soon!

Just listening to the blistering live CD. A real bummer I never saw this band on stage.

Remember that the Blu-Ray is only for the documentary (which I found no better than average) and not the concert.
