PET sounds. That's the only way I've ever heard it said. I've heard Brian Wilson say it that way, so that's good enough for me.

Anyway, I've heard both, but have always said PET Sounds myself.

I always say PET sounds because I parsed it that way when the LP came out, and it now seems to be impinted in my brain and resistant to change. This despite my having read over the years that the Beach Boys meant the album to be a reflection of their pet SOUNDs at the time.

I usually say "over rated" myself.

i totally agree: 5 decent songs and bunch of filler.

brian wilson is not, IMHO, the genius that beach boys fans make him out to be.

The consensus among musicians and singers and critics is that Pet Sounds is an all-time masterpiece. There will always be some people who disagree, which is fair enough. The first time I listened to it, I didn't quite get that I was hearing the greatest album of all time.

to each their own, as the saying goes. one man's trash is another man's treasure, i think sgt. pepper blows pet sounds away.

but i also think "god only knows" is the greatest love song ever written.

and "caroline, no" 'wouldn't it be nice' 'you still believe in me" and "sloop john b" are classic rock songs.

the rest though, i don't get, and believe me i've listened to it quite a few times actually wanting to "hear" it.

I'll never understand the genius of this album though there are some great tracks. The one that really baffles me is "Smile". I do think Brian Wilson is an amazing talent-but overrated is the honest truth, especially with "Pet Sounds" and "Smile" in my opinion.

The album is above me, but God Only Knows (title?) is one of the greatest songs of all time. Kudos to the folks at Big Love for putting it as their theme song.

oh my god i thought "smile" absolutely reeked! listened to it twice and brought it back to the used store.

over-produced, over-sung, over-played. just basically completely over the top.

Renny, I've gotta hand it to ya, you did pick the five biggies, but I wouldn't call the rest filler. "Here Today" offers exciting instrumentation. I don't think "Sgt. Pepper" is a perfect album. Is there such a thing as a perfect album? Perhaps not. To me "Pet Sounds" is the closest to perfection.

the weak spot on sgt pepper, for me is george's "within you, without you".

other than that....pretty darn strong throughout.

Renny, I'll take Georgy-Porgy's sitar blowouts over afternoon tea with Macca on "When I'm Sixty-Four" any day. Neither track has anything to do with the rock idiom, but I think George pushed the envelope there, while Macca regressed.
