Description
This 4-CD set spotlights the epic last show of the Dead's European tour. Notably, it was also the group's penultimate performance with founding member, Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan, who died in March the following year. Despite his failing health, Pigpen electrified European audiences with his charismatic performances of 'Chinatown Shuffle,' 'Good Lovin'' and (his latest song) 'The Stranger (Two Souls In Communion).' The tour, and the show, represents a bittersweet capstone to his too-short career.

Description
Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Grateful Dead's iconic Europe '72 Tour with the original Europe '72 album, newly remastered.Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction, with mastering by GRAMMY® Award winning engineer Dave Glasser, Produced for Release by David Lemieux.

In another industry defying move, the Grateful Dead followed up their first Gold Record, the 1971 live showcase SKULL & ROSES, with another live album, one that to most fans and critics surpassed even the excellence of the previous offering. From April 7 to May 26, 1972, the Dead performed and recorded 21 live concerts, plus a set in a television studio, with every night being an exceptional display of the magic that was uniquely the live Grateful Dead. These concerts and this tour, 50 years later, are still considered one of the highest of high points in the Grateful Dead's performing career. In an era when a double album was rare enough, the Dead outdid even their own lofty standards by producing a 3 LP masterpiece that to this day is considered one of the finest live albums ever produced. Remastered from the original analog tapes, the album has never sounded better.

Have to say 2nd Dead disappointment for the day -
This will be a skip as I have the extended version from the Golden Road Box as well as Complete '72 (yes listened to the box a couple times)
The other is an announcement of a Vinyl box of the final four shows of the tour: 5-19 thru 5-22 at Lyceum Theatre, London. Its a typically beautifully packaged set, upward of $500.
I am hoping that the vinyl will not be THE annual big box, but...who knows.

Considering Ace celebrated its 50th Anniversary last week I am hoping we see some special release this year.

Yeah it is one of the four shows of the vinyl, either 25th or 26th, as both are 4 discs in the Complete 72. It is an inverse of what they typically do with the annual 'big' CD box sets - selecting one of the shows for a vinyl release.

Again, I am personally hoping this is not the only box of the year (though for all the work/cost involved would not be surprised). Or worse, I hope this is not a sign of the future, with the boxes being vinyl.

For anyone who does not have the box set - or the individual releases they did for each show - this is a really a nice set and was great run. But I am thinking I spent less (not much!) for the Complete '72 in 2011 than what this box is costing...
(This is what I get for sayin' just the other day to a friend, 'well they have not really dipped into the 80's, but I hope they don't...' I take it back.)

The Dead have announced another general release for the same day as the 2CD set of Europe '72 -- there will be a 4CD set of the complete final concert of that tour recorded on May 26, 1972 at the Lyceum Theatre in London. I've added pre-order details to the first post.

A packshot for the Lyceum Theatre 4CD set has been added to the first post.
