From the musicuniverse.com:
Multi-platinum selling English supergroup Asia is set to release Asia In Asia – Live At The Budokan, Tokyo, 1983, as a deluxe box set containing 2 CD, 2 LP, 40 page 12-inch book, Blu-ray, printed memorabilia and more, through BMG Records on June 10th. The audio will also be available for the first time on CD, 2 LP and digital.
Asia, Geoff Downes (Buggles & Yes, keyboards & vocals), Steve Howe (Yes, guitars & vocals) and Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake & Palmer, drums) with special guest Greg Lake (ELP bass & lead vocals), visited Japan to promote their phenomenally successful debut self-titled album (1982) and Alpha (1983). The second of three shows at the Budokan arena on December 6, 1983, would make history as first live broadcast between Japan and MTV. Featured are some of Asia’s most memorable hits like “Time Again,” “Only Time Will Tell,” “Sole Survivor,” “Wildest Dreams” and “Heat Of The Moment.”
Greg Lake stepped in, on short notice, following the sudden departure of Asia’s John Wetton ahead of the Japanese dates. Despite a short period for Lake to learn the songs the Japanese shows were hailed a great success.
Carl Palmer was proud of his former ELP bandmate for performing exceptionally. “Greg Lake did a great job jumping into John’s shoes. So many songs to sing, he did it so well.” For Downes, the release stands as a testament to Asia’s resilience. “It deserves its place in the Asia catalogue. It demonstrates the level of professionalism that we have always striven to bring to the Asia name.”
All audio is remixed and remastered in 2022 from the original MTV telecast concert audio and includes previously unreleased, post broadcast encore tracks. The Blu-ray includes a restored original broadcast concert video with 2022 remixed audio, and a restored original concert laserdisc edition featuring alternate camera angles.
The 40 page, deluxe 12-inch book features rare and unseen band photos, memorabilia and extensive new sleeve notes new quotes from the original band members.
The deluxe box also includes printed memorabilia, such as concert posters, tickets and band photos; two exclusive new Roger Dean artwork A3 posters; two reproduced live broadcast original concert tickets; replicated, matt laminated original AAA backstage pass; original concert VHS advert; three glossy 8×5-inch rare band photos; new, bespoke metal and enamel ‘Asia’ logo pin badge; and an with exclusive signed Roger Dean postcard.
Asia was a true rock “supergroup” bringing together John Wetton, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes and Steve Howe who had already amassed tens of millions of record sales with their collective bands of the 70s. Leaving behind their progressive roots, Asia embraced the commercial FM rock sound that dominated US airwaves and took the new MTV video channel, by storm. The single “Heat Of The Moment” was a world-wide monster smash and their 1982 debut spent an incredible nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

This is awesome news.
I briefly covered this era of Asia in my book.
I transferred my VHS copy to DVD years ago and also included my copy of the Road to Budokan special which doesn't seem to be here, which is pretty baffling.
At the time, this was the largest satellite broadcast ever.
There were three songs not shown on the broadcast or on the radio broadcast (though I have that full show off the soundboard in perfect sound).
They have included two of those songs with "Cutting it Fine" and "Daylight" but for some unknown reason still haven't included "Don't Cry."
So, as always this is a cool release that could've been better and more complete.

What made John Weston suddenly leave the group? Pretty neat they got Greg Lake to step in.

While nobody has ever truly stated what happened, basically Wetton was an alcoholic and it was at the point they had to ask him to leave the band (though it was management that stepped in). Lake turned down Palmer several times but eventually caved and joined the band. He was worried about the lack of rehearsal time but did a great job.

Oh yeah that’s true John was an alcoholic but sobered up later. He was supposed to be on my first Cruise To The Edge back in 2017 but died a month before we sailed. He was a big reason (along with Hackett) for me to pony up the $$$ to go on it. That first one is still my favorite cruise. Getting to talk to Carl Palmer was one of the highlights.

Over the years the rest of the band have had less than favorable things to say about Lake's performance, despite having helped them out at the 11th hour. Palmer has said that Lake "knocked the stuffing out of the band", and that the songs sounded "alien" because they had to play them in a different key to suit Lake's voice. And in Steve Howe's recent biography, he says that Lake was a real prima donna, and would stop in the middle of a song during rehearsals and say stuff like "remind me I have to do such-and-such later". Should be interesting to see how they reconcile that with any glowing reviews they give him in this box set.

When I interviewed Steve (and it’s in my book) I asked him about the key changes and he said it didn’t sound quite right and the voice of Asia was Wetton (even though he and John hated each other at this point). Greg did an amazing job with such little rehearsal time but what I find amusing is that when Greg left in 1984 it was because he didn’t believe in doing commercial music like Asia did. This, despite Love Beach and Greg’s two solo albums being Pop!

I’ll just be getting the CD set as it includes a different night from that tour along with the MTV show.

Anyone know if this includes a 5.1 mix? I didn't see any mention in the above description so assume it's stereo, but a surround mix would be a bonus.

The posts at the top of this thread suggest two remixes of the same show. The LPs and one of the CDs have the audio of the full show that aired on MTV plus a couple of songs that weren’t included in the original broadcast. The second CD boasts newly mastered audio of the concert that Asia played the previous night

I found some additional information about this set that confirms what IP said about these being two different performances. But why would Mark Goodman be part of both discs if only one of them was broadcast on MTV?

I’m thinking that’s because they recorded the first night as a backup in case the live feed the second night had issues. So, I believe Goodman introduced both shows in Tokyo (not the other dates in Japan). What’s also odd is my FM audio recording has “Don’t Cry” which isn’t on either of these shows listed.

Reviews have not been good.
Apparently, “Time Again” is in mono for some reason and some of “Sole Survivor” was cut.
Plus, unless you get the overpriced box set, the single CD also fails to include the full show with “Don’t Cry” missing (along with “Daylight” and “Cutting it Fine”), and I don’t think the box set even includes “Don’t Cry.”
I’m hoping someone on here can compare and see if these reviews are accurate.
I was only going to get the single disc version, but I’m guessing my complete recording from the FM broadcast in 1983 is better.
