A recent rumor has been confirmed. This is a multi-track release. Apparently they are going to revive the "From the Vault" tag for multi-tracks.

This is from a Rhino press release (they had the incorrect date of the show, I corrected it):

Recorded live at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on February 19, 1971 (the same year the classic live LP Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses) was recorded).

Here's the track list:

Disc 1
(First Set)
Two Ditties
The Merry-Go-Round
Broke Down
Spring Song
Truckin'
Loser
Cumberland Blues
Hurts Me Too
Bertha
Playing In The Band
Deal
Dark Hollow
Smokestack Lightnin'
China Cat Sunflower
I Know You Rider

Disc 2
(Second Set)
Greatest Story Ever Told
Johnny B. Goode
Bird Song
Easy Wind
Deal
That’s It For The Other One
I. Cryptical Envelopment
II. Drums
III. The Other One
Wharf Rat
Good Lovin'
Casey Jones

Thanks for the news, Federico. I'm right there to order it the moment it's available for pre-order.

Any news if there's going to be a bonus disc pre-order from Dead.net?

Whilst I would say it's 95% likely that this news IS correct, in the interests of accuracy, it should be pointed out that the press release mentioned above is actually from GDForum, *not* Rhino - it is apparently based on pre-release info that Rhino have given them but, as of yet, there has been no public announcement from Rhino directly themselves.

In any event, I'm looking forward to this one!!

For what it's worth, Geoff at GDForum used a pdf press release from Rhino for the information. He cut and pasted the info whole, in the process repeating the Rhino error that the show was from August of 1971. He later corrected it and I changed the date from the original e-mail.

Smyler,
I am going to wait and see if there is a bonus disc. There hasn't been a multi-track release without one in quite some time.

Linda, you're a gem. I'm going to wait things out like Federico and see if there's a bonus disc of material being offered direct from GD Store. If not, I'm using the CD Universe one you mentioned.

Just in time for Summer!

Thanks for the update...just compared to Deadbase and its the complete show. The Deadbase listing starts with Truckin'...I'm wondering if the release is actually going to index the 3 'songs' - tuneups - individually or lump them together.

Extra tidbit of info: this is the first show for "Bird Song" and "Deal".

Have to agree, and keep and eye open on any exclusive discs...

There is a hint that Rhino is going to re-something One and Two from the Vault and offer a 7 disc box of the three Vault issues together. But ... each FTV is two discs so what could be on the 7th disc?

Is the citation for the rumor.

Interesting about the repackage...nothing on Dead.et though, huh? I'm a little on the fence...they'd have to do something really special to Vol 1 and 2 (or a tempting price), for me to reinvest...hopefully disc 7 will be a bonus they toss with 3 as well, but...grrrr...to early for thought

My bet is that GD Store will probably offer some different ordering options for those who want the box and for those who just want the Port Chester '71. Me? I'm going for the box. I didn't have the other two yet and they are both shows I want.

According to the GD forum, the seventh disc is going to be more material from the TFTV shows.

My recollection is that when TFTV was first released it was believed to be material from 2 nights (off the top of my head 8/23/68 and 8/24/68 but I've not checked these dates). It was later discovered to be from just the first of these shows. More material from these shows was released as bonus tracks on the remastered Anthem Of The Sun. I can't quite believe that Rhino would expand TFTV with material that's already available, so I'm expecting more from The Shrine Auditorium, August 1968.

Also, I'm sure I read somewhere that the pre-order bonus was a book about the From The Vault series, but I can't find that now.

Smyler, I rememebered that one of the original Vaults was a comp - just could not remember which...so I figured they would be adding to that release if they are expanding, versus a standalone 'bonus disc'. I am pretty sure that Vault 2 is the complete show...

Steve, definately go for the whole set if you don't have the others...well worth it.

I remember stumbling on Vault 1 at a Woolworths of all places when it was released!

I think Smyler is right. The original supporting material for Two From the Vault announced that this was the best of 8.23 ad 8.24. But the later consensus was that the release was entirely from 8.24. I remember this because my birthday is the 23rd and I thought I had at least part of a birthday show only to be disappointed later.

If I had to guess it would be bonus material from the 2.71 run. There were all kinds of aural maniplations that had to be performed to get TwoFTV in releasable shape. Unless that was done at the time of the original release it would take less effort to prepare material from the '71 multi-tracks.

But I didn't believe the release would be called Three From the Vault and I didn't think it would be 2.19.71. So what do I know?

Apparently TFTV consists of the WHOLE show from 8/24. The Alligator > Caution > Feedback sequence from the remastered version of Anthem Of The Sun comes from 8/23 so presumably some work has been done on at least some of that show. The rest of 8/23 consists of:

Cryptical Envelopment > Drums > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment; Dark Star > Saint Stephen > The Eleven; Death Don't Have No Mercy

All these songs, in their 8/24 versions, appear on the original TFTV.

I can see one argument for putting out the rest of 8/23 thereby getting the whole of both nights released. But I can also see another argument that, as one version of everything played over both nights has already been released on either TFTV or AOTS, it would be more interesting to put something different on the seventh disc. Who knows.

Of course, the vault release that REALLY needs sorting out is the following one; Hundred Year Hall, which needs rereleasing as a 3 CD set containing the entire 4/22/72 show.

IF there is to be a bonus disc available, I would agree with Federico - more material from 8/68 wouldn't be particularly aurally different from the material on TFTV (although it would still be a damned exciting listen!)

More from the Capitol Theatre 2/71 run could include some of the songs not played during 2/19 - Ripple, Hard To Handle, Minglewood, Cold Rain & Snow, the Stephen>NFA>GDTRFB>NFA jam from 2/18/71 etc. etc.

Agreed. I'm simply going on what I've read elsewhere which may or may not be correct. According to Rock Radio:

Quote:
Three From The Vault will be released June 26th, along with enhanced reissues of the first two From The Vault collections. That day will also see a box set with all three volumes in the From The Vault series, totaling seven discs.

Preorders for Three From The Vault and The Vault Box that come through the band's dead.net website will be packaged with a copy of the Dick's 'Dex booklet, which charts all the music across the 36 releases in the Grateful Dead's Dick's Picks series.

http://www.therockradio.com/2007/05/grateful-dead-to-release-live-album-and.html

According to Mog.com

"Two [From the Vault] will include a disc of music not included on the original 1992 release."

I'm afraid I don't have a link for that.

The long and the short of this would appear to be that in a addition to Three From The Vault (a 2 cd set), there will be a 7 CD box set containing a revamped One From The Vault (2 cds), a revamped Two From The Vault with an extra disc that wasn't part of the original release (3 cds) and the new release, Three From The Vault (2 cds).

Anyone pre ordering this box set from dead.net will get a bonus booklet, 'Dick's Dex'. There's no mention of any bonus cd.

This is directly from the Rhino site. Sorry, lost the link.

Also on June 26, the revamped site will also offer enhanced reissues of ONE FROM THE VAULT ($24.98) and TWO FROM THE VAULT ($31.98), the latter containing a disc of music not included on the original 1992 release, as well as a special-edition, seven-disc boxed set, THE VAULT BOX ($69.98), containing all three From The Vault releases. All dead.net preorders for THREE FROM THE VAULT or THE VAULT BOX will include an exclusive copy of Dick's 'Dex, special booklet containing a comprehensive Dick's Picks song index and discography featuring a complete track listing for all 36 releases from the series.

Recorded February 19, 1971, at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, the long heralded 20-song performance on THREE FROM THE VAULT has traveled a long road to release. Originally slated as a follow-up to the rapturously received Two From The Vault, the Capitol Theatre tapes were mixed, mastered...and then, for reasons somewhat obscured in the smoky haze of time, the release got put on the back burner and forgotten for a decade and a half.

Fortunately for Dead fans, THREE FROM THE VAULT is worth the wait. Featuring Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan and Bob Weir, the concert sustains the creative momentum the band created recording their breakthrough albums Workingman's Dead and American Beauty the previous year. During more than two hours of music, the Dead debuted no fewer than seven brand-new songs in the first two nights of the run alone. They would all become beloved staples of the live repertoire for the rest of the band's touring life. Heard here are the second-ever performances of "Loser," "Bertha," "Playing In The Band," "Greatest Story Ever Told" and "Wharf Rat," plus the world premieres of "Bird Song" and "Deal." Some of the new tunes had an intriguing work-in-progress feel to them. For example, "Greatest Story" (still known at the time by its working title, "Pump Song") had not yet received its "Abraham and Isaac" bridge. And "Playing" and "Bird Song" only hint at the magnificent vessels of sonic exploration they would soon become.

The show was significant for other reasons as well. With drummer Mickey Hart on hiatus, the band began developing a leaner, more spacious sound. Bill Kreutzmann, now the sole drummer, rose to the daunting challenge magnificently, as did his bandmates. This was Grateful Dead music stripped to its bare essence -- the dawning of what has been called the band's "turn on a dime" period.

More on the 2FTV bonus disc,

http://www.rhino.com/media/requests/2007/170236request.lasso

Quote:
TWO FROM THE VAULT contains an early show from the band's history and features a concert recorded August 24, 1968 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with members Garcia, Lesh, Pigpen, Weir, Kruetzmann and Hart. Taking place shortly after the release of Anthem Of The Sun, the concert highlights the band's stunning improvisational skills at the peak of the Haight-Ashbury scene. A newly added bonus disc contains three tracks available for the first time including a performance of Anthem's side two -- "Alligator" and "Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)" -- along with the appropriately titled "Feedback."

Conventional wisdom says that the Alligator>Caution will be the 8/23/68 version, currently available as bonus tracks on Anthem Of The Sun - that said, it is suggested elsewhere that this could be from Fillmore West 8/21-22/68, which is also believed to be multi-tracked.

I would be very disappointed in Rhino, the band and David Lemieux if they simply re-packaged the bonus material from Anthem. I don't mind going for a sonically refurbished 1FTV and 2FTV especially to get another disc's worth of material but don't make half the bonus disc something I already have.
