Gotta give it to Al Gore-he's really creating awareness about a very real problem and now he's doing it the Bob Geldof way-with a massive all-day concert on July 7. I'm very interested and I actually care about the cause! I can only hope the lineups improve, but there's already some very good people involved and I'm sure more to come. Love to know who's fortunate enough to be booked for Antarctica! Seriously, they've said they're going to try to have someone play there! The story... AL GORE, KEVIN WALL, PHARRELL, CAMERON DIAZ LAUNCH UNPRECEDENTED CAMPAIGN, CONCERT TO COMBAT CLIMATE CRISIS "Live Earth" Concerts in All 7 Continents to Reach Global Audience of Over 2 Billion Los Angeles, CA - Detailing a historic effort to engage billions of people across the globe, Kevin Wall, Al Gore, Pharrell Williams, Cameron Diaz, and the MSN Network today launched Save Our Selves (SOS) - The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis. The announcement was made at the California Science Center. SOS is designed to trigger a global movement to combat our climate crisis. It will reach people in every corner of the planet through television, film, radio, the Internet and Live Earth, a 24-hour concert on 7/7/07 across all 7 continents that will bring together more than 100 of the world's top musical acts. Live Earth alone will engage an audience of more than 2 billion people through concert attendance and broadcasts. MSN has partnered with SOS to use its reach to make the Live Earth concerts available across the globe. The Live Earth audience, and the proceeds from the concerts, will create the foundation for a new, multi-year global effort to combat the climate crisis led by The Alliance for Climate Protection and its Chair, Vice President Al Gore. SOS was founded by Kevin Wall, who won an Emmy as Worldwide Executive Producer of Live 8. "Our climate crisis is the paramount challenge facing humanity. SOS is more than a global distress call. SOS will give the world the tools we need to answer that call with meaningful action. The most important part of SOS is how individuals, corporations, and governments respond," Wall said. "Our climate crisis affects everyone, everywhere, and that's who SOS is aimed at. Only a global response can conquer our climate crisis. SOS asks all people to Save Our Selves because only we can." "In order to solve the Climate Crisis, we have to reach billions of people. We are launching SOS and Live Earth to begin a process of communication that will mobilize people all over the world to take action," Gore said. "The Climate Crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement. We hope to jump-start that movement right here, right now, and take it to a new level on July 7, 2007." "At MSN, we have the worldwide audience and the technology stage to help unite a global community around SOS and Live Earth," said Joanne Bradford, corporate vice president and chief media officer of MSN. "Anyone around the world with an Internet connection will be able to come to MSN to view not just the concert events, but also an extensive collection of interactive media that will entertain, educate, inspire and ultimately drive change." Wall announced 25 of the 100 top musical acts that have answered SOS's call and are performing at Live Earth. SOS is also engaging other celebrities, CEOs, athletes, academics and government leaders to engage their constituencies. Please see that attached list of 25 artists. "More than 100 artists are performing at Live Earth and they're all headliners. That's what it takes to engage billions of people. We're not just engaging fans of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Snoop Dogg, or the Foo Fighters and Faith Hill. We're engaging them and everyone in between," Wall said. "We've been overwhelmed by the response from the artist community and are feverishly working out the logistics for all of the bands that want to be involved. Today we are announcing just the first 25 and will soon be announcing even more headliners who, for contractual reasons, cannot be announced today." The campaign's identity is based on SOS, the international Morse code distress signal: three dots, followed by three dashes, followed by three dots. SOS is the most urgent, universal message we have, and SOS will use that signal as a continuous distress call to prompt individuals, corporations and governments around the world to respond to our climate crisis with action. "SOS is creating an unmatched communications platform to take on an unparalleled crisis," Wall said. "Our message must saturate the globe if we're to succeed, and we will. In the US, we're partnering with NBC-Universal and its networks. On satellite radio, we have SIRIUS and XM. In the UK, we're partnering with the BBC. In Japan, we have a historic partnership with two broadcast partners. We have already secured television, Internet and wireless coverage in 120 countries, and the rest are soon to come." Wall announced that Live Earth concerts will take place in the Brazil, Shanghai, Japan, Johannesburg, London, Sydney, and the Eastern United States. Live Earth will be broadcast worldwide on MSN, which was the first sponsor to answer SOS's call. MSN is one of the world's most popular Internet destinations, and as such will allow the SOS campaign to have a global reach. MSN has services in over 42 markets and 21 languages, and more than 465 million people around the world visit MSN each month. Beginning today, people can go to http://liveearth.msn.com and begin participating in the global movement, and on 7/7/07, to watch the Live Earth concerts. Live Earth is being produced by Control Room, of which Kevin Wall is the CEO. Control Room has produced and distributed more than 60 concerts since its founding a year and a half ago featuring Beyoncé, Madonna, Green Day, Dave Matthews Band, Keith Urban, James Blunt, Snoop Dogg, the Rolling Stones, among others. Its multi-partner network provides a global reach for live offerings through broadband, television, digital movie theatres and mobile phones throughout the U.S. and the world. Live Earth will implement a new Green Event Standard that will become the model for carbon neutral concerts and other live events in the future. The Green Event Standard is being developed in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Commission to create a way for venues to be LEED-approved. I'll guess Snow Patrol. July is winter in Antarctica, it'll be almost impossible to get there. Don't scientists who 'winter' there settle in in Feb or March and they are pretty much isolated from April till October? Remember that Woman doctor who had breast cancer? The best they could do was air drop supplies. Antarctica is not a place to F with its winter. hey wait, send Britney there now!

Hopefully they do a more thorough job of releasing these on DVD than we've seen with other benefit shows in the recent past...

The Live 8 DVDs were a complete joke, even the ones specific to each country! I really hope they don't mess this up, and that they let MTV nowhere near the concerts for coverage. But, I expect the worst.

Roger Waters has now been added-perhaps another Pink Floyd reunion? Nah, right? From AP:
Roger Waters, Duran Duran and Korn have been added to the lineup for Live Earth, Al Gore’s seven-city, twenty-four-hour concert for the environment. But organizers hit a snag when the National Park Service denied them a permit to hold the U.S. portion of the July 7th show on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Undeterred, Gore called Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe, who introduced a resolution allowing the concert to be held on the west lawn of the Capitol, where the presidential inauguration, annual July 4th concerts and the 1990 Earth Day event have all been held. “We’re cautiously optimistic that with the bipartisan support this resolution has, this concert will be available for free on the west grounds of the Capitol,” says Live Earth organizer Chad Griffin. In blocking the permit, the Park Service cited prior applications to use the space and concerns that organizers would not be able to supply enough portable toilets for the event. But officials at the Park Service — a division of the Interior Department, headed by Bush appointee Dirk Kempthorne — declined to specify what organization had reserved the Mall, leading to speculation the denial was politically motivated. “Our decision was based strictly on prior applications,” insists Stephen Lorenzetti, acting superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks. The beat goes on: Rihanna, Corinne Bailey Rae and Joss Stone have also confirmed they will play alongside previously announced headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Police and Kanye West.

Wow-although there's some obvious crap (at least to me), with just The Police, Roger Waters, Smashing Pumpkins, Dave Matthews Band and to a lesser degree Bon Jovi, Melissa Etheridge and John Mayer (I hope he shreds on guitar but I doubt it for this show) I think this will be pretty cool. The lineup could certainly be better, but it is pretty impressive. Not a shocker-looks like London is going to be the best again. Not sure how long everyone will play (hopefully at least 5 songs). And, I hope the worldwide coverage is not abominable like MTV's Live 8 butchering! Tix go on sale next Monday, April 16. I'm in South Jersey, 10 minutes from Philly, so I might try but I'll probably just watch it at home.
From Pollstar.com:
Washington D.C. is going to miss out on one heck of a concert. The lineup for USA Live Earth was announced April 10 for Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., and the lineup includes The Police, Roger Waters and Dave Matthews Band. "Capping Live Earth with a blockbuster show like this will ensure we meet our challenge of building a mass audience to combat global warming," executive producer Kevin Wall said. "Live Earth will be a monumental event both in terms of entertainment and in turning the tide against global warming." The Live Earth concerts are expected to take place on every continent (yes, even Antarctica) on 7/7/07. London's lineup includes Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Genesis, Foo Fighters and Beastie Boys. The U.S. show was originally planned for the Capitol Steps of Washington D.C. but ran into a political quagmire when opponents of carbon dioxide emission control kept the politically charged event from taking place. Also on the U.S. lineup are Kanye West, John Mayer, Fall Out Boy, Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, AFI, Akon, Kelly Clarkson, KT Tunstall, Ludacris, Melissa Etheridge, Rihanna, and The Smashing Pumpkins. The concerts will begin in Sydney and continue across all seven continents, concluding with the U.S. show. Tickets go on sale April 16 at 10 a.m. EDT. "We hope the energy created by Live Earth will jumpstart a massive public education effort," Live Earth Co-Chair Vice President Al Gore said.

I can also add this about the London show from a Sydney newspaper The Sydney Morning News Herald (the Australian lineup has not been announced yet), and it is a great lineup in the UK...But who will play in Antarctica? Ha-ha.
Bands for London leg
For the London leg, Madonna, Genesis and the Red Hot Chili Peppers will take the stage at the 90,000-seater new Wembley Stadium on July 7.
Duran Duran, the Foo Fighters, the Black Eyed Peas, Keane, Snow Patrol, Bloc Party, Razorlight, Corinne Bailey Rae, Damien Rice, David Gray, James Blunt, John Legend, Paolo Nutini and the Beastie Boys will also perform in London.
The campaign, Save Our Selves - The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis, hopes to trigger a broad movement to address what Gore calls a global climate crisis.
Live Earth founder and executive producer Kevin Wall said: "Capping Live Earth with a blockbuster show like this will ensure we meet our challenge of building a mass audience to combat global warming.
"Live Earth will be a monumental event both in terms of entertainment and in turning the tide against global warming."

If MTV has anything at all to do with this, I'll pass. Most definately. After Live 8 I'd rather watch paint dry.

To my knowledge MTV is not broadcasting this-I believe VH1 and NBC are among the networks handling coverage here in the US.

I always felt Canada had the best line up for Live 8. Unfortunately, I've never been able to find recordings (audio or vidfeo) of the Canada show other then the little bit that was officially released. If I remember correctly the Canada show included Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, Deep Purple, Guess Who & more.

If I remember correctly the Canada show included Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, Deep Purple, Guess Who & more. Geff: Wow is that ironic-I just finally finished putting together my 6 DVD set of the Canada show in it's entirety including the highlights of the other gigs. A friend of mine in Prince Edward Island recorded the whole show for me on VHS and I just completed the awful task of making a beautiful set with each act broken into chapters, no commercials, etc. It was torture! About half the show was great, the other was brutal. In order it was (*=good to me!): Tom Cochrane * Sam Roberts * Bryan Adams * Dobacaracol K'Naan Simple Plan Bruce Cockburn * Les Trois Accordes Randy Bachman & The Frogs (played all BTO songs) * Deep Purple * African Guitar Summit Great Big Sea * Blue Rodeo * Gordon Lightfoot * Our Lady Peace Jet * Jann Arden Motley Crue * The Tragically Hip * DMC Barenaked Ladies Neil Young * It's taken me years, but I have all the shows except Moscow and I'm trying like hell to find that one. I could certainly do a trade with you if you want, something like this is pretty rare, but I'd be more than happy to help you out. The Berlin show was also amazing and the London one was easily the best. I hope I can somehow get all the Live Earth shows because I'm sure the official DVDs will blow like Live 8's did. Also, Tom Green and Dan Ackroyd were hideous hosts for Live 8 in Canada-absolutely painful to watch. The coverage was phenomenal-not one song by a Canadian act was missed!

Roger's not happy with the whole idea of this: http://www.nme.com/news/the-who/28459 The Who frontman attacks Live Earth gigs
19.May.07 6:36pm
The Who frontman Roger Daltrey has slammed the upcoming Live Earth concert as being un-environmental.
The concerts being organised by former US vice-president Al Gore, will take place in city's across the globe on July 7 and feature the likes of Madonna and Foo Fighters.
However the singer believes the shows are undermining their own aims of raising awareness about climate change.
"Bollocks to that! The last thing the planet needs is a rock concert," he told The Sun. "I can't believe it. Let's burn even more fuel. We have problems with global warming, but the questions and the answers are so huge I don't know what a rock concert's ever going to do to help."
However The Who man - who claimed the gigs are pointless as most of the planet were aware of global warming issues - did offer a novel solution of his own to the world's environmental woes.
"My answer is to burn all the fucking oil as quick as possible and then the politicians will have to find a solution," he declared.
The worldwide shows have also being criticised by Live8 organiser Bob Geldof, however Daltrey was also critical of that event, even though his band played the London leg.
"What did we really achieve at Live 8? We got loads of platitudes and no action. Who were we kidding there?" he asked. "At least with (original event) Live Aid, Bob Geldof was willing to work the trenches and they did save a lot of lives. We could see what we achieved at the end of it."

And now The Pet Shop Boys are getting their licks in: http://www.nme.com/news/pet-shop-boys/28571 Pet Shop Boys criticise Live Earth
25.May.07 3:05pm
Pet Shop Boys singer Neil Tennant has spoken out against this summer's Live Earth concerts.
Tennant has also hit out against Bono for his politically active role.
He said: "The Princess Diana concert is fair enough, but I feel more uneasy about the Al Gore thing.
"I've always been against the idea of rock stars lecturing people as if they know something the rest of us don't - it looks arrogant.
"It's not as if they have a private source of information. To state the obvious as if you are the only person that knows it is intellectually weak."
Of the U2 frontman he told Yahoo: "Bono uses his celebrity but in doing so he increases his celebrity.
"I've never even totally convinced that the rest of U2 feel comfortable with that."
The gigs take place on July 7 in venues across the world - the London Wembley Stadium gig will feature the likes of Madonna, Snow Patrol, Razorlight and Beastie Boys.

Just an update as this gets closer on who is playing so far. The London lineup is pretty amazing, and the rest, well, at least Antarctica will rock! There are some good acts in the other locales, but too much crap for the most part. I'm pretty certain that after these shows are over 99% of the people watching will go back to their lives unchanged by watching Snoop Dogg and pondering Global Warming.

I'm getting old. There are a total of 4 artists on that huge list that I currently care about & 4 more that I liked in the past.
Melissa Etheridge The Police Red Hot Chili Peppers Alanis Morissette
Smashing Pumpkins Madonna Bon Jovi Genesis
Of those Alanis is the only one I'd go very far out of my way to hear or see.

I actually like almost everyone in London (Genesis, Foo Fighters, Bloc Party, Duran Duran, Chilli Peppers, Keane, Kasabian, Metallica, John Legend, Beastie Boys, Razorlight, Snow Patrol, Spinal Tap) and in NJ, I really want to see Roger Waters, The Police, Smashing Pumpkins, Dave Matthews Band, Bon Jovi and John Mayer (if he shreds on guitar). In Sydney, Crowded House, Wolfmother, Ghostriders and John Butler Trio I want to see as well, and Robert Plant, Lenny Kravitz, Chris Cornell, Mando Diao and people like that in different locales. I admit some of these lineups really suck, but there are a lot of good names spread out. But, I do admit there's a lot of crap!

Meanwhile, the Rio portion of the event might not happen at all: http://www.nme.com/news/live-earth/29426 Live Earth Rio suspended?
Jul 5, 2007
The Latin American leg of Live Earth taking place in Rio De Janeiro could be called off due to safety concerns.
Lenny Kravitz, Macy Gray and Pharrell Williams were due to be among the performers.
Police claim that they do not have enough officers to guarantee crowd safety at the open-air gig on Copacabana beach.
Brazilian promoters of the event, the only free show in the series of global concerts highlighting climate change, are hoping to overturn the decision.
A giant beach stage in front of Rio's Copacabana Palace hotel has already been erected with organisers hoping to attract up to one million visitors, reports BBC News.
Brazilian prosecutor Denise Tarin has requested a suspension of the concert, saying security efforts by police would be concentrated on preparations for the Pan American Games starting on July 13.
Eight cities will be holding concerts across 24 hours on July 7 including London, Tokyo, Sydney and Johannesburg.
In a statement Brazilian promotion company Mondo Enretenimento said it was "working to guarantee the realisation of this important international event".
It said it had plans to use dozens of observation towers and platforms, as well as police cameras, as part of the security scheme for the event.
If Tuesday's court injunction is not overruled, it could spell a second cancellation in the Live Earth series, following the scrapping of a concert in Istanbul because of a lack of sponsorship and interest.

Here are what appear to be the final lineups for Live Earth Saturday. Some shows are great, others suck out loud. Interesting to see Yusuf/Cat Stevens headling Germany now-cool. Seems the Robert Plant show is out-not cool. McCartney has not yet confirmed his appearance in the UK and Guns n' Roses may appear in Rio. But, basically this is it. Also, for those who want to watch, coverage is as such: NBC (8-11pm) Bravo (8am-2am!) Sundance (4am-2am!) CNBC (7pm-2am) it will also be online from every site at MSN.com-hopefully somebody will check some of this out and I'm not the only one! The whole thing is rather foolish and hypocritical to me-jetting all these stars and using all this power for a concert to tell people about Global Warming-but from an event standpoint, I think it's cool. Just wish someone had a clue how to get good acts everywhere.
