I only know him from the video games, in all honesty, but he was clearly a legend.

Legend of a coach, announcer, and all around good guy. Here's one of his memorable broadcast moments that's been making the rounds a lot today.

Even people who don't know anything about football have heard this guy's name... that's how profound his reach was.

RIP.

What I liked about his color analyst work was that he could explain stuff, making it simple to understand for those of us who don't comprehend everything related to the game.

I loved that he praised the men in the trenches, footballs real hero’s. RiP.

The Madden football game has generated more than $7 Billion in revenue since its debut.
He should be alone on the cover next year.

Although I'm a Raiders fan, I was a touch too young to remember John as the Coach, although it was always something special to hear him talk about them.

Aside from Tagliabue, he might be the most important man in this history of the post-merger NFL; his common man commentary with the ability to explain the game in easy to understand terms opened it up for the casual fans, in a way that most of the ex-athletes just couldn't. And of course, from there, putting his name and imprint on the video game likely means he'll be one of the major names of the NFL for years to come.

And best of all - as the Coach with the highest winning percentage of any coach with 100+ wins, he Just Won, Baby

Thanks for the All-Madden team, and the holy roller, and the Ghost to the Post, and Old Man Willie. Thanks for 30+ years of the best commentary in the game, and thanks for teaching kids of all ages to not just want to play football, but how to think football.
