Description
Available for the first time ever in North America, Whitesnake’s RESTLESS HEART: SUPER DELUXE EDITION 4CD/1DVD collection features newly remastered and remixed versions of the original album, along with unreleased demos and studio outtakes. The DVD includes music videos and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the album with new interviews from David Coverdale. The set comes with a hardbound book filled with rare and unseen photos from the era.

RESTLESS HEART: SUPER DELUXE EDITION opens with a newly remixed version of the album that’s closer to the sound Coverdale initially intended for his new solo release. It’s followed by a newly remastered version of Restless Heart, including the singles “Too Many Tears” and “Don’t Fade Away,” plus three bonus tracks from the album’s original Japanese release. The DVD features several music videos (“Too Many Tears” and “Restless Heart) plus the Making of the Album featurette. There is also a video EP featuring the three relevant songs from the 1997 live acoustic album, Starkers In Tokyo, originally only available in Japan.

As I've always understood it, this was a Whitesnake album in name only.

Essentially a Coverdale solo with the Whitesnake name forced on it by the record company.

That aside, I've never heard this album.

If Guy Pratt is there playing on it, then it's Whitesnake. :yay:

Vandenberg and Carmassi were already in Whitesnake (Vandenberg since 1987 and Carmassi since 1994, and he also was in Coverdale/Page as were Tuggle and Pratt).

It started as a Coverdale solo album and became a Whitesnake album in 1997.

The lineup that toured it was Coverdale, Vandenberg, Carmassi, Steve Farris (ex-Mr. Mister on guitar), Derek Hilland on keyboards and Tony Franklin (ex-The Firm, Blue Murder on bass).

I interviewed both Farris and Hilland and they enjoyed the tour, but Coverdale told them it was just a tour and a way to end Whitesnake by calling it a "farewell tour."

By 2002, Coverdale reformed the band.

This is a good album, but a mellower one and there's some blues and more melodic material than heavy stuff.

"Too Many Tears" was a minor hit in the UK.

On the DVD in the Slip of the Tongue box set, there is a 40 minute interview with Coverdale and Vandenberg and they talk about this album. It was originally supposed to be a Coverdale solo album, but as Coverdale describes it, a bunch of record company people "had an intervention" with him and convinced him to put the Whitesnake name on it. Coverdale even said something like he realized that his name is synonymous with Whitesnake, so it just made sense to put Whitesnake on the cover. It didn't sound like he really fought the idea at all, unlike Iommi did with the Seventh Star album (as an example). Coverdale also said that after the decision was made, he decided to remix a few of the tracks to make them more Whitesnake-sounding, and said he that now he thinks it was to the detriment of those songs. I pretty much got the impression that was Coverdale's big regret with the album.

After listening to the interview, I am surprised that Coverdale and Vandenberg did not continue when Coverdale started it back up again with Good To Be Bad. It's pretty obvious that the two were good friends before, during and after Whitesnake....up until the present day. Coverdale sure didn't seem a bit disappointed with the material they wrote together. I wasn't expecting to get commentary about the Restless Heart album but when talking about it Coverdale started dropping song titles and talking about how much he loved the stuff and it didn't come off like a cheap promo ad for the next boxset release.

It's pretty crazy that this has never seen an official release in the USA until now. Slide It In was certified double platinum in 1992, Whitesnake was certified as an 8 million seller in 1995, Slip of the Tongue was certified at platinum in 1990. Slip of the Tongue was a big commercial disappointment but this still was a band/artist with certified sales of 11+ million over the last three studio albums and Restless Heart still did not get an American release. The record company people couldn't have liked the record very much.

I have to be honest, I got this album back in the day, listened to it two times and it went on the shelf and I never listened to it again. Thought the lineup was stellar but found it to be a really boring almost adult contemporary album and frankly I just didn't get it. Maybe I'd like it better now. I got the last three boxes so I might just grab this one to round out the collection and maybe I'll like it more now than I did back then. I'm doubting the idea that there is a lot of real stuff in the vault from the pre-Slide It In days, but if there is, then Coverdale is going backwards because I think most people would rather get material from the Trouble - Saints & Sinners album. Kind of wish I would have bought the Box 'O' Snakes now, but it was a bit costly considering the extras were a couple live discs and a DVD. Prices for used copies are way too high now. I also don't have any motivation to upgrade the studio albums from this era as I think Warner Bros./Geffen did a good job mastering the CDs for the original releases in the USA, so I'm not really interested in the Little Box 'O' Snakes either.

It’s a good album but IMO it’s the weakest Whitesnake album. I’ll stick with the original release , no need for me to get this. I’ll save my money for the Sabbath Technical Ecstasy box and The Sex Pistols box.
