Sometimes I want to post some art from an artist and it doesn't fit comfortably into an existing thread or I don't think there's enough work out there to fill out an ongoing "Appreciation" thread like Steve Rude or Jack Kirby. A recent example is William Stout -- he's only done a handful of actual comics that I can see and there isn't a ton of his work scanned at a high resolution out on the internet, so I think a thread on him would last about a page or two. Another example is Pete Poplaski, who does those amazing covers for the various Golden and Silver Age DC superhero comic strips... there's those and then the 6-8 pages he did for Tom Strong and... not much else.

Anyway, might as well put them all in a thread. I love art. I love comics. Here's my latest interest -- Paul Grist of JACK STAFF and KANE fame. This one's colored by Gerry Turnbull!

Anyway, on Paul Grist -- he's mainly known for Jack Staff and Kane, but I mainly read Jack Staff. He wanted to do a Union Jack comic for Marvel, they turned him down, and then he decided to do it anyway. Along the way, he threw in other British and American superhero analogues. It's great stuff and more entertaining than 99% of the Big Two comics I've read in the past decade or so.

What I really like about him as an artist is his unique and well-designed page compositions -- they're unusual but still crystal-clear in their storytelling.

I see that a collected version of that Marvel book is out lately. The whole series looks pretty good.
I hope the trade sells well enough for them to consider putting out a hard cover version, and one,
hopefully, with wider pages to avoid the gutter loss I saw in the trade. Acuna's work (and others)
in the book looks quite good.

No where else to really put some of these, so I'll drop these Hildebrandt monster posters here...

This looks interesting. Ikaris as a barbarian-biker Cap? Is it set in that Alex Ross Marvels continuity?

Is that who it is? For some reason I assumed it was Killraven.

Unless it's a different character with Cap's shield (and boots), Ikaris' necklace and He-Man's furry trunks...I mean, it could be anybody. Also, The Thing has flame powers...unless Johnny Storm has now become the new Thing or...something. It looks like it could be a Marvel version of the Atomic Knights and that sounds okay to me.

I have and read that comic and can't remember anything about that story. I liked the Dr. Droom story, though.

Man, it's a shame they never printed this last Arzach / Arzak book in English... especially when you consider some of the absolute crap they do publish.
