Description
What was the hardest-rocking band ever to notch three Top Ten hits? For our money, it’s Steppenwolf. Formed from the Canadian band The Sparrow (including Dennis Edmonton a.k.a. Mars Bonfire), and led by vocalist John Kay, Steppenwolf scored with “Born to Be Wild,” “Magic Carpet Ride” and “Rock Me” in the space of nine months back in 1968-1969, and hit the charts eleven more times up though the mid-‘70s. Often tagged as a biker band—mostly due to their prominent presence on the soundtrack to Easy Rider—Steppenwolf was actually a socially-conscious, highly political outfit, never more so than on their controversial LP Monster, one of 14 charting albums released by the band over a 20-year period. This ability to enjoy commercial success on both the single and album fronts puts them in a very rare category in the annals of rock and roll; and, unsurprisingly, their albums have been well represented in the CD reissue era. Their singles, however, have largely been unavailable on CD in their original 45 mixes, as the tapes for the singles have long been missing (legend has it Dunhill label chief Jay Lasker discarded all the label’s multi-track tapes and mono masters after having deemed them too expensive to store). But, just like on our critically-acclaimed Grass Roots singles set, engineer Aaron Kannowski has, after a worldwide search, rounded up the best sources available and put together a two-CD set that doesn’t just include the A and B-side of every Steppenwolf single on the ABC/Dunhill label (including, for the first time ever, a decent-sounding “Magic Carpet Ride”), but of every John Kay solo single as well! And, speaking of John Kay, he sat down with co-producer Ed Osborne for a thorough, track-by-track review for the liner notes (John also requested that we use the album version of “Monster” rather than the single version, because the single is such a pieced-together “Frankenstein” job…pun intended). At 38 tracks, and featuring photos by long-time band photographers Henry Diltz and Tom O’Neal nee Gundelfinger, this is the ultimate Steppenwolf collection—one long dreamed of by the band’s fans—and it’s finally yours after years of preparation from Real Gone Music!

Bannings: Not yet, but there's still time....
I was reading the notes on this and saw the reference to the Grass Roots set they did a few years back and clicked thru to check it out...
It looked good so I added it to my cart - then I noticed at the bottom of the page the Rhino 2cd set anthology that I have as well listed for sale...

What shocked me was the price - only listed the first CD not the whole set and there was a used one for $969.00 and a new one from $902.00!
Now I know that doesn't mean anyone will pay that much for it, but still the fact that two sellers would list it for that much was incredible...

The new seller is Meag-Movie-Deals, the used seller is NBSCA.

Maybe time to sell at that price.....

An excellent comp. Some of these cuts are alternate takes as well. I just wish they had used the original single edit of Monster and not replaced it with the full album version. Also great to have John's solo singles in there. But I also gotta have stereo versions too, ha.

Real Gone is a great label. They need to crank out more of these A's + B's CDs, the sky's the limit. (Confidentially, I asked them to reprint the Blood, Sweat & Tears "Complete Columbia Singles" 2CD, and they said "Working on that!", but don't tell nobody just yet, ha...)

That Steppenwolf set is fantastic, nice to see that others will get a chance on this. Real Gone was formed by the person who fronted Collectors' Choice, is that correct?

From the Real Gone website:

"In 1993, two Ohio boys, Gordon Anderson and Gabby Castellana, both separately started businesses—Collectors' Choice Music and Hep Cat Records & Distribution--that were to become two of the most important outlets for buyers and sellers of vintage music recordings. Now, 18 years later, they have joined forces to launch Real Gone Music, a reissue label dedicated to serving both the collector community and the casual music fan with a robust release schedule combining big-name artists with esoteric cult favorites."

Gordon is the Collector's Choice guy.

Some of the stuff on this set apparently came from vinyl, no tapes available I assume,
Anyone know how many/which?
Won’t stop me from buying it, just curious

I bought this the first time around in 2015. Just scanned the booklet with the set and while there is a whole lot of information about the music, there is nothing indicating vinyl usage, just what's mono and stereo.
