Went on an Eisner binge over the holidays. One shop up in Baltimore had their annual 50% off sale, so I loaded up there on the books (though some came from Amazon). My closest LCS closed down -- by his own choice he says, as he was making more money online and at conventions and wanted to focus on that -- but before he did, I bought another big chunk of Warren Spirit magazines. He says he has more of the regular color comics as well he'll sell me in the future.

Nice haul! You'll enjoy those. My favorite presentation of Eisner's work is in the Warren magazines. Issue # 5 was the first time I'd seen his work. Bought it off the newsstand right away!

Awesome! Now all you need is a complete set of the Spirit Archives.

Which I have.

I have them as well, but prefer the Warren mags. I don't like the reproduction in the Archives (though they are far better then DC's reproduction on their own Golden Age properties.) I have actually been considering selling them to free up some room.

Fail -- those Archives are beautiful!

I guess you have to believe that, as it's the only format you've got.

You're probably right, I just think when you are looking at the work of one of the greatest artistic influences in comics, it's nice to see the linework. The larger size of the Warren mags showed off Eisner's art better, as did the B&W reproduction of all but one story per issue. (And didn't Corben color the story in Warren's Spirit # 1? You don't get to see Eisner and Corben working together very often!)

But I like that they are original size -- those newspaper inserts were smaller than a comic book, and Eisner was a master innovator in page layout. I like to take them in like I'm some WWII vet with a pipe in his mouth, a few years removed from Omaha Beach. I've said too much.

In your fantasy, you're a snot-nosed baby boomer hippie, with bell bottom pants and the stench of Hai Karate. As you page through your bloated Warren magazine, I appear at the door wearing Bermuda shorts and white loafers. "Why don't you make yourself useful and mow the lawn?" A sip of Pabst swirls down my gullet, just like the fortunes of this great country going down the drain.

Yeah, I've paged through those and much prefer the magazines, hence that decision.

I was in Will Eisner's class for 3 years at the School of Visual Arts.
We called him Will.

I'm afraid to ask what everyone's patting in this thread...I just hope it doesn't involve Bermuda shorts and a pipe being smoked.
