I don't know if there are any other members who are fans of Jim Starlin, but I just stumbled across this listing for a new graphic novel by him, Dreadstar Returns. Scheduled to be released on Jan. 12. Apparently there was a crowd-funding campaign for it early last year but I heard nothing about it until today!

There is also a guidebook coming on the same date for those interested in such things.

I think a friend of mine helped fund that Dreadstar Returns.
He was a big fan of the series and I used to buy him the new issues each month (as I had a subscription
service). He and I also attended a ComicCon in Chicago in the mid 1980s to see Starlin in person, and my
friend submitted a question from the audience (written notes that Jim Starlin would read and answer—or not).

My friend wrote, "How about giving Vanth his sword back?
Starlin scoffed, "Ain't happening."

That's pretty cool. I must admit I was disappointed when he took away the sword. But he seems to have it back based on the cover of "The Return". Maybe that's what is returning. I pre-ordered the book, anyway. Really looking forward to it. I still reread the back issues every few years.

Yeah, I lost interest in the book after the Sword was lost, or absorbed, or whatever happened. I forget.
I stopped buying additional copies for myself and soon wasn't even glancing through the books I picked up for my friend.

Syzygy helped him absorb the sword.

The book definitely took a dip in quality once Starlin quit drawing it. I didn't mind the other artists, but I think Starlin lost interest in it at that point. Once Peter David took over as writer I quit buying. But with Starlin writing and drawing this one I think it should be fun.

I loved Dreadstar and ask influenced by Jim Starlin's work. I really couldn't follow it after he left. I think after an airbrush accident he had trouble drawing, so it's great that he can draw a Dreadstar GN now.

Been awhile since I looked at the Kickstarter, but I thought maybe he was doing just some of the artwork/layouts
and someone was doing finishes. Maybe he recovered enough to do it all.

It's inked by Jaime Jameson.

I think Starlin did need some help.

Missed the Wrong Earth on the list- I preordered that one as well. The previous two mini-series were very well done.

As for Future State, I have no interest in the concept, but I have read a couple of Swamp Thing stories in anthologies by the creative team doing the F.S. Swamp Thing issues and enjoyed them enough to give it a shot. And I like Joelle Jones, who is doing the F.S. Wonder Woman and want to check out her take on W.W. Judging by the solicitations, these are pretty self-contained so I don't think I need to read any of the other Future State books. If I'm wrong, I'll just have to live with being out of the loop because that is the limit of my commitment to this "event".

I don't know if there are any other members who are fans of Jim Starlin, but I just stumbled across this listing for a new graphic novel by him, Dreadstar Returns. Scheduled to be released on

There is also a guidebook coming on the same date for those interested in such things.

The Dreadstar Guidebook is a special 96-page hardcover companion volume to Dreadstar Returns. In the vein of The Official Handbook Of The Marvel Universe and DC's Who's Who, The Dreadstar Guidebook is the ultimate fountain of information about Dreadstar and the many characters and locations that have appeared in the pages of his adventures over the years.

That is a weird pose that Dreadstar is striking with the sword there.

Anybody read GENERATIONS SHATTERED #1 (ONE-SHOT) ? Kind of curious . It has classic LOSH Superboy, Kamandi, and 1930's Bat-Man. Plus it seems to be written by Dan Jurgens.
( Looks more interesting than Dark Metal to me ;)

I thought of buying it for some of the characters, but I'll admit that Dan Jurgens is a minus for me. I haven't found his writing interesting since the original Booster Gold series. The only creator I like on the book is Kevin Nowlan. So I skipped it.
Also, it is a Dark Metal spinoff.

I thought people might get a kick out of Chip Zdarsky's newsletter:

Comic books are a science. They’re math. A lot of people don’t realize this but there are key formulas at the heart of most comic book stories. Such as this one:

Peter Parker + Happiness = Goblin gotta murder someone

or this one:

Batman + Anything = $

Recently a healthy discussion was had on twitter about comics. No, not the standard “writer v. artist” one, which was settled years ago (“writer/artists” are the best), but one about the use of pages in a standard superhero comic book.

Is this better:

Or is THIS better:

Are repeated talking heads better or is a page of action better?

A lot of people—and also twitter users—were asking me to weigh in, so here it is:

There’s no way of knowing.

For decades comics have simply been one or the other. Pages upon pages of Venom talking or pages and pages of Venom gesturing next to a veiny thicc leg, floating oil ejaculate and a remarkably calm decapitated head. Comic scientists have been working tirelessly to somehow combine the two types of pages into a single comic book, but to mixed results. In the famous experiment of ‘98, “Wonder Woman: Chat ‘n’ Kick #1”, several test readers left the lab confused. A particularly agitated reader took two scientists hostage, demanding to meet “the wizard who broke the world.” One of the comments from a subject upon reading the book summed up the problem:

“I liked both stories. The one where Wonder Woman talked and the one where Wonder Woman kicked. But you told me I was reading one story and not two, so I’d like to go home now please.” -Test Subject 7

Is there hope on the horizon? Possibly. Marvel has decided to bring back Marvel Two-In-One with me as writer again, but this time the “Two” is talking heads and action and the “One” is the story. Will we be successful? Absolutely not, but I could really use the paycheck.

WOW KICKING OFF 2021 NICELY
Thanks. Feels good.

ANYTHING ELSE GOING ON?
Yes! Something very unusual!

My first ever Marvel Hardcover is out today! And, shockingly, it’s an OMNIBUS of our INVADERS book! Not only that, but there are … TWO covers for it??

The ALEX ROSS one:
Click for full size

Which is amazing. Who doesn’t want a giant Namor crushing a swastika painted by THE Alex Ross? What a world.

But then! There’s THIS cover!
Click for full size

Yup, that’s right. SKOTTIE YOUNG did a variant cover of the Invaders being adorable after crushing Nazis!

I’m really happy that this is all being collected like this. Myself, Carlos, Butch and the gang gave this our all and I’m immensely proud of the story. So, if you put off buying the single issues or the two trades because how on earth can you have a story split UP like that, well, this is for you!

HARDCOVERS ARE FANCY. YOU’RE FANCY NOW
I guess so!

Anyhoo, welcome to 2021. Wear a fucking mask.

Bye!

-Chip

I'm a big fan of Dan Jurgens and didn't realise he had a new comic out, so I read Generations Shattered and will "review" it for you, Steve.

It reads just like a Jurgens book, so I liked the flavour of it and Jason probably would not. It felt similar to Zero Hour, that is to say, yet another Crisis-like imminent-destruction-of-everything-everwhere epic. Except unlike most of DC's products, this one was very understandable (even for someWAN like me who hasn't kept up with the last several reboots), attractively drawn for the most part (multiple artists taking a few pages each), and featured a lot of characters from different eras all acting like themselves. Pretty good story and held my attention throughout. If Jurgens is writing the other Generations one-shot(s) then I'll gladly read more, although I'll never understand why DC doesn't let him draw the books he writes. He pencilled about five pages total. :(

I would recommend Generations Shattered.

Jurgens is a nice Minnesota guy. I talk to him at conventions all the time about what he has coming up.
He is one of my “readable comic” go to’s.
