With the release this month of the new Sony gaming platform known as PS5, I was wondering if the player does CDs and SACDs like the older models. But it turns out it won’t play any music discs. That’s ultimately bad news for audiophiles as it’s another device that we can’t count on. It will play Blu-ray but not much music is available on blu generally.
So we have lost OPPO and now these home entertainment players won’t do music either.
I really have to keep an eye out on the next generation of Sony 4K players as my current Sony x800 does SACD/DVDA but future models may delete that. So I may have to squirrel away x800’s.

There was a rumor about that a few months back but now that Sony has made available the detailed tech spec sheet of the PS5, it's official: this PlayStation can use UltraHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD discs but not audio CDs, Super Audio CDs or DVD Audio

I have no idea what I'm talking about and I'm sure the math, science and economics are well beyond me, but I feel like music disc compatibility would be practically free to include.

It used to be a no brainer to include a disc drive system that can play a CD in all the previous incarnations but we are now seeing a definite move away from physical players.
A player like a Sony PS5 is the center piece for most young people in their Home Entertainment system as most 30 year olds and younger love gaming (I am not a gamer).
I fear a future of the physical disc not being seen as vital to the manufacturers. The loss of SACD/ DVDA players for me is very disconcerting but a top tier product like the PS5 not even doing the lowly CD is alarming.

Y'all realize this is actually a trend for Sony, right? The PS4 didn’t support CD playback either.

I didn't have the PS4, the PS2 and 3 that I used as my first Blu-ray players did do all music CDs including SACD.

I looked up the PS5 specs on a hunch to see what the manufacturers are doing now and was shocked to see no CD playback, didn't know that this trend is even older with the PS4. yikes!

I was stunned a few years back when I realized my PS4 didn't play CDs.

For some reason, I had assumed that any technology that played DVDs would automatically also play CDs, as every other DVD player I ever owned did, including the previous 2 Playstations. Even the original pre-DVD Playstation played CDs.

Agree, didn’t realize that even the PS4 didn’t play CDs. I used my PS3 to play everything till I finally needed a 4K player and switched to a stand alone Sony player (the x800).

Btw....in the 4K Blu-ray world, the Panasonic’s are considered the best but they do not play SACD. I’m one of those people with a lot of SACD’s.
