Aside from being an actor, Lander was a huge baseball (and Pittsburgh Pirates fan), and worked as a scout for a while. I saw a story yesterday that said he kind of butted heads with the makers of "A League Of Their Own" because he kept correcting historical inaccuracies in the script. It also said he interviewed players from the women's league to make sure he got terminology right for his role as the radio announcer.
And as DFT said, you couldn't wait for him to pop up each week.
