CD Edition limited to 5000 limited edition copies
Re-discover In Our Lifetime?, Marvin Gaye’s final Motown album. A masterpiece, it’s now expanded to two discs, and includes the mythical, long lost Love Man sessions,
Funky and inspirational, In Our Lifetime? chronicles a genius at war with himself. It touches on theological and personal issues plaguing Marvin at the time, and produced the hits “Heavy Love Affair” and “Praise.” But the album didn't have the mixes or final tracks he approved, and he left his longtime label for CBS the following year. This 2-CD expanded edition includes a newly remastered version of the original LP, outtakes from those final mixes, plus a previously unknown and unheard alternate mix and lineup of the album.
But that’s only half the story: this album was originally conceived as a party record Marvin called LoveMan. Except for the single, “Ego Tripping Out,” he never finished that concept. Yet those Love Man sessions were recently uncovered — an incredible treasure of demos and alternate instrumentation that’s a beacon for soul and Marvin Gaye fans.
Also included in this limited package is a 28-page booklet with detailed annotations, rare photos, full lyrics, and two essays: one by Gaye biographer David Ritz, who provides a compelling context, and another describing the Love Man sessions.
Get into the full story of the extraordinary In Our Lifetime, a compelling chapter in Marvin’s devastating autobiography.
DID YOU KNOW… Marvin worked on the album at studios in Los Angeles, Honolulu and London. In London’s Odyssey Studios, the Who were completing their album Face Dances in the room next door, and Pete Townshend would regularly check in on Marvin’s progress.
Updated Willy's thread title with the in-store release date ~ L.

I am happy to see a new Motown release from Hip-O Select. I was starting to think they were going out of business since their website has not changed in a month or so.....I will be so disappointed if we can't at least get through 1967 in the complete Motown singles collections (I am still hoping they follow through on the original plan).

From everything that I've heard, the Motown stuff is what's keeping them afloat. I wish they'd release more stuff too, but I'm guessing that times have gotten a little tougher and they're having to do more analysis on whether or not each title is going to turn a profit.

I suppose that makes it a little more likely that more Motown singles collections will be released.
The rarest stuff has already been covered through 1966, so it's not so important now. Most of the post-66 material was manufactured in huge quantities and I'm guessing it may not be so hard to assemble one's own complete collections of the succeeding years?

Aren't those Motown singles boxes for the most part mono singles mixes? That alone is an incentive to buy, buy, buy!

Wow, I am glad to hear someone else feels that way too. I much prefer the mono mixes! The producers labored over what people would hear on their radios, and there were not many FM stereos. The 45 sound of "My World Is Empty..." is SO much more claustrophobic in nature than the thin spread-out stereo mix and so much more in keeping with the the song's lyrics and melody.
I was thinking that one could accumulate all of the 45's themselves more easily from '67 onward because of the mass production. I'm not so sure though, does anyone know how many rarities exist from the later period at Hitsville? It seems to me that I might even have a good 3/5's of the singles from my ahem, teen, years anyway.
But, you know, there are so many people who only like the stereo mixes - never quite understood that. There are a few stereo tracks that I like better but usually they are from the later years, and even a handful that I like equally well (like the later Marvelettes stuff is good in both).

Yes, those Motown singles box sets feature all of the singles in their original mono single mixes! I have all of them and they're excellent. From the all mono sound to the detailed liner notes with details about all the tracks, the series is a must for all Motown fans. So buy, buy, buy.

I know, I have all of them. They are my absolute favorites - I've even made copies of each cd so that I don't damage them. I've added other "Detroit"-appropriate tracks as needed to fill them out and only for the correct year (no, not anal-retentive! at all!!)
For instance in 1961, I added Jackie & Johnnie's "Someday We'll Be Together", all the Tri-Phi & Harvey stuff, "I'll Love You Forever" by the Holidays (Edwin Starr), etc. Anything that had a Motown connection I've accumulated and slotted on the correct year's copies. So these are really "The COMPLETIST'S COMPLETE COLLECTIONS"!!!
It's been so much fun doing that but the delay in getting 1967 is frustrating me. I already have mapped out my additions (you might guess, for one, J.Wilson's "Higher & Higher" since that was the Funk Bros!)
I'm just trying to figure out how to "console" myself if they discontinue the series. My question is how difficult it would be to create one's own complete 1967 collection, provided good quality vinyl could be obtained? Obviously we would not be able to do the wonderful remastering, insightful notes, etc., or have such substantial product to hold in our hands.

You will love them! I've got their deluxe Supremes items too. "Where Did Our Love Go" is a gem, having both mono and stereo versions of the LP, and additional cd of prev-unissued tracks including their live show upon return to Detroit after their "Caravan of Stars" touring. The unreleased studio tracks are a lot of experimentation trying to arrive at their "style". You hear a lot more Florence (her background vocals were stunningly lound then), and Mary as well.

James,
Yes, I've got the Supremes packages and the first David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks ones as well. I missed the previously unreleased David Ruffin solo album, and it looks like it won't be included in the complete David Ruffin series.

Another teaser from Jim's "The COMPLETIST'S COMPLETE MOTOWN SINGLES COLLECTION 1966"
"Oh How Happy" by the Shades of Blue (written by one Charles Hatcher, aka Edwin Starr) - a #1 on Detroits' WKNR that summer, for a month or so I believe.
That should give clues to some numerous Charles hatcher-related tracks I added.
A teaser from Jim's "The COMPLETIST'S COMPLETE MOTOWN SINGLES COLLECTION 1963" - I included a track by a local girl who auditioned for Berry in the early days but went on to succeed at Atlantic (nope, not Aretha). I'm sure everyone knows who.

Atlantic's other big female vocalist was Ruth Brown, but I think she broke big before Motown.

Well, I'll divulge my indulgence....Barbara Lewis was from the 'burb Salem (near Ann Arbor) so I felt compelled to add "Hello Stranger" to 63, and "Baby I'm Yours" and "Make Me Your Baby" to 65.
My intention is to add another local effort that involved George Clinton to the 1967 collection. Any guesses? It's a real cool track that will sit VERY well with "I Was Made to Love Her", "(Loneliness Made Me Realize That) It's You That I Need", and "Reflections", et al.

Yeah, I've got Barbara Lewis, "Hello Stranger" is the smoothest of smooth. I have no idea what the George Clinton track is.

"(I Just Wanna) Testify" by the Parliaments - one of Detroit's greatest soul/pre-funk tracks. How cool is that? Now if only I could easily find my 45!
PARLIAMENT/FUNKADELIC - Songs
Parliament/Funkadelic was a highly influential and very large funk musicians consortium led by George Clinton with a long history. They started out as the Parliaments, a soul group best known for "(I Wanna) Testify" (1967). In 1968, the Funkadelic was formed from rhythm section members of the Parliaments whose remaining members were renamed Parliament. Parliament/Funkadelic hit their stride in the late 1970s with "Tear The Roof Off The Sucker (Give Up The Funk)" (1976), "Flash Light" (1978), and "One Nation Under A Grove" (1978). Lesser-known songs from 1975 and earlier are shown below. Parliament/Funkadelic was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

I'm thinking of the first version on Revilot Records (related to Golden World and Ric Tic Records) from 1967. I believe I have it on an out-of-print CD compilation as well. Somehow my 45 was only played a few times.
I know there is also a Parliament remake from 1974 on an album. That made it to CD around 1995 I believe. Obviously I will be going back to the 67 version (WHEN (not if) the 67 collection arrives ! - fingers crossed! )
