Agreed -- don't ask if you don't want the real answer. That said, he didn't have to answer or he could have answered a different way.

Former Journey frontman Steve Perry has explained why he turned down an invitation to jam with Eddie Van Halen back in 1985 following the departure of David Lee Roth from Van Halen.
The band would go on to find major success with Sammy Hagar taking over on lead vocals, but prior to his joining Perry was invited to a jam session with Eddie, he revealed to Rolling Stone.
Steve shared, "Man, at some level within me I felt so honored because I was in awe of Eddie's natural talent. He was just born with it. I wanted so badly to do that. We talked about how cool that could be musically.
"This was before Sammy. The next day, and in the weeks to come, I thought, 'I don't know that I should do that. If it goes creatively to what I know it can go to...' Whatever I could bring to that, I know it would be something I'd really love doing."
He went on to explain why he decided against it, "My only problem I had with it was the thought, 'I don't know that I could be the guy to go out and represent the David Lee Roth years with my voice. I don't know if I want to be that guy.'
"I think representing their legacy up to that point would have been something vocally that I don't think I was really suited to doing. It's a different kind of singing.
"David had something vocally that I would say was in kinship with Louis Prima. Later on, he did 'Just A Gigolo' and sounded more like Louis Prima. He was a real character."

I have no problem with putting Perry's voice over Van Halen's music. But this was at the same time that Perry tried to drive Journey off the cliff with that awful Raised On Radio poop. So a horrible fit when considering the musical direction each of them were headed.

Agreed, and I think he’d have been an ego clash with Eddie.
I like what all three VH singers brought to the table, maybe even four with Mitch Malloy who was hired and then left when the DLR nonsense started in 1996.
I think Malloy (now in Great White) was just a little too generic for VH, but the rehearsal tape I heard wasn’t bad.

Sammy Hagar’s “Rock And Roll Trip” on AXS-TV ended its five-season run tonight with an hour-long live episode. It included a surprise appearance by Rick Springfield, and focused on a band of actors and a facility that they use for live streams and such. The episode ended with an acoustic version of “Dreams” with Sammy and Vic Johnson from The Circle. Nicely done.

I hope we see at least some noodling. Ed was good at that. Just remaster the old Hagar-era stuff, throw some noodling on there and be done with it. That era deserves a proper remaster like the Dave era. Some people hate the Hagar era. I love it as much as the Dave era. Depends on my mood.

The Van Hagar stuff was remastered a couple of decades ago or so, but released only as a Japanese box set.
Yeah, I'm surprised the Sammy stuff wasn't remastered when he did that ill-fated reunion in 2004. i think it was announced or rumored to be in the works around that time.
