You cannot hate the music you grew up with. And since I grew up in the 80s, it is music that I love. Even Haircut 100 and Ah Ha.

It's like any decade - loads of shite, some good stuff. All just associative pleasant and unpleasant memories if you were there. Still, I've got a fantastic hip-hop mix CD by DJ Spinbad that has made me develop previously untapped admiration for the artistic outpourings of Nu Shooz, Oran 'Juice' Jones, Men at Work etc.

I'll take his share if you don't want it, Hugh. Whatever portions I don't need or want I can sell on eBay..

I love all kinds of music, don't get me wrong.
BUT if I were to be stranded on a desert Island, I'd want my 80's collection to be with me.
Absolutely (for ME) a very good decade for music.
Some very poignant, and soul changing times for me happened in the 80's, and that music still hits the right buttons when I hear it.

Quite the opposite for me. The '80s were a decade of abject misery for me, and the music of the decade -- all those damned drum machines and DX-7s and hair bands and... well, all of it just brings all that misery back for me. And I'll dispute the "we love the music we grew up with" argument, because I grew up with '70s music and I sure as hell have no love for disco. Nope, for me the decade to listen to is the '60s -- where experimentation and diversity of styles was the order of the day.

Really, the only thing about the '80s that doesn't cause me to vomit just a little -- aside from the comics of the first half of the decade -- were the movies. Good decade for movies. Despite the fashions in those movies.

Everything else about the '80s makes me nauseous.

Hugh Cherry is correct, and John Mietus is wrong. XTC came from the 80s, JM!

I discovered XTC in the '90s so that's the decade I associate them with. Same with Robyn Hitchcock, the Wonder Stuff and They Might Be Giants.

Tell you who was good in the 80s: Prince. 'Dirty Mind' (1980) is a fantastic album, maybe even his best. He produced solid gold up to and including 'Lovesexy' (1988). The 'Batman' soundtrack was shite. Very patchy since then.

Has any other artist so neatly fitted nearly all of their good stuff into a whole decade? I'm thinking maybe David Bowie in the 70s.

I hate 99% of the pop crap that infested the radio and MTV back then.

Barely tolerate the heavy metal I enjoyed back then.

And can only enjoy the stuff I barely knew existed back then, like the Dead Kennedys and Black Flag and Misfits.

Our generation has a lot to answer for.

Steven, you named 3 of my favorite bands of the time, which I listened to back then! Yeah, there was a lot of crap in the pop charts and metal too back then. All the metal bands went "glam" and tried to do power ballads to hit number one.
The good stuff was what is generally known as alternative music, but covers a wide variety of sound. Stuff like New Order, The Cure, The Smiths, then into the punk sound like DK, to say nothing of all the acid house bands (late 80s/early 90s admittedly), plus industrial bands like Front 242. If you knew where to look, the 80s were outstanding.

The 80's had a lot of great music. I was a disc jockey back then. I played a lot of songs that are still popular today. Tons of songs by U2, the Police, Men at Work, the Go-Gos and the B-52s are still fondly remembered.

I once felt that 80's music was the best music ever. I now call it a tie between 80's music and 70's music.

And John Mietus meant to say "nauseated," not "nauseous."
