Didn’t realize John’s 80th birthday just passed on Friday. Time is moving on my friends. I just would love to recommend you guys tuning in to an interview with Paul McCartney for the occasion where he talks about John. It’s on the Beatles channel of SiriusXM and you can stream it from the beginning. Touching, informative, emotional and highlighted by songs which fit in with the topics they discuss. Here is one of the many stories:

Paul tells the story of when John brings “Come Together” to him. Paul tells him “this sounds too much like ‘You Can’t Catch Me’ by Chuck Berry”. John says “wow, you’re right.” It was like don’t worry we’ll go into the studio and change it up a little. Then they play John’s subsequent cover of “You Can’t Catch Me” followed immediately by “Come Together” and you can tell Paul was right. Really cool stuff.

Of course I love them all, but I have always noticed that the lyrics in the McCartney songs were always sickly sweet (Michelle , ma belle, these are words that go together well) and John’s were edgy rock (yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dogs eye). Notice a slightly different feel there? John was a rocker and Paul was a serenader. The world, however, was obviously ecstatic that the Beatles had both ends of that spectrum covered.

Somehow I can’t see John writing “Let ‘Em In” or “Silly Love Songs”. More like “Instant Kharma” and Cold Turkey”.

But I can get all fuzzy inside on each listening of “Can’t Buy Me Love” or “All My Loving”.

What a great f*ckin band.
