For those who don't know, that would mean UPS takes the package from the shipper to your local post office and the post office takes it the last leg of the journey. It's less expensive for the shipper and usually adds a day to the total ship time. Fedex, DHL and others also offer the same service.

Well, the USPS is the only service in the US that delivers to every address. FedEx's version is called Smartpost.

I have - on the very same day - received a UPS delivery from a UPS truck and a UPSM delivery from the post office. If UPS is coming to my house anyway, how in hell can it be cheaper for them to use the post office for a second delivery??? I can't believe that their internal tracking systems can't let them coordinate things if they wished to. What's the story?

amazon shipped my CD on release day.
my CD is, right at this moment, in urbancrest, ohio.......2 hours and 15 minutes from my house by freeway, 2 hours and 45 minutes by back roads.
delivery date is still august 27.
spiderboy is right, something is amiss with UPS.

That’s the free market economy at work. All these companies have figured out that they can charge people for “premium” service. If you’re not willing to pay that extra, your stuff's not going on a plane - it’s going to be the last thing thrown on a truck, and only if there’s space for it.

Believe it or not, sometimes a driver will intervene. I have had a UPS situation where the UPS driver, who I think recognizes my last name only because he shows up here so often, wound up with two packages with my name on it. One was going to my post office for delivery the next day with the mailman and the other was coming directly to me via normal UPS delivery. He just gave me both packages. It is not uncommon that your local UPS guy has both your house and your post office on his route.

A couple of months ago I had a package sitting in Chicago for three weeks. So, short answer- Yes.

I don't think anything is worse than DHL (although USPS seems like it is now being forced to the bottom). I live near Austin. Ordered a CD from ebay. Tracking shows that it was in Houston--the one in Texas, like me--two days ago. Then it went to Forest Park, GA, for a day where it was scanned twice. And then back to Houston. I might get it today from USPS. I hate DHL.

Agree on DHL. But UPSMI seems pretty close these days.
