Description
The Doobie Brothers celebrate two major milestones this year as the band marks its 50th anniversary and its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November. The 50th Anniversary Tour that was also planned for this year has been rescheduled for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. This will be the first time that principal band members Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, Pat Simmons and John McFee have toured together in more than 25 years.

Before the band is welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rhino will release a new boxed set that highlights some of the music that helped make the Doobie Brothers one of the most popular bands of its generation. THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO will feature quadraphonic mixes of Toulouse Street, The Captain & Me, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, and Stampede. The four Blu-ray audio discs come in replicas of the original vinyl record sleeves and are all packaged together in a clamshell box.

For this collection, all four albums have been mastered using the original four-track Quad mixes. The set includes both the quadraphonic and high-resolution stereo (19224 DTS-HD Master Audio) mixes for each album. To enjoy the Quadraphonic mix as intended, the Blu-ray audio discs should be played using Surround Sound.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO brings together four essential albums from the band’s early days. It begins with the group’s second album, Toulouse Street, which was released in July 1972. The record achieved platinum status and launched the group to stardom with the hits “Listen to The Music,” “Rockin’ Down the Highway” and “Jesus is Just Alright.”

The following year, the band returned with The Captain & Me, which was certified double-platinum on the strength of hits “Long Train Runnin’” and “China Grove,” as well as fan favorites “South City Midnight Lady” and “Without You.” These back-to-back classic albums represent one of the greatest one-two vinyl punches of the 1970s. Many songs from the albums are still played every day on the radio, a testament to the timelessness of the music.

In 1974, the Doobie Brothers released the group’s fourth album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. The record peaked at #4 on the albums chart and was certified double-platinum. It also featured the band’s first #1 hit, “Black Water,” which was originally released as the B-side to “Another Park, Another Sunday.”

Stampede is the final studio album featured in THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO. Released in April 1975 and certified gold, it also peaked at #4 on the albums chart. It includes the Top 40 hits “Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)” and “Sweet Maxine.” Stampede would be The Doobie Brothers’ last studio album with original singer/guitarist Tom Johnston until he re-joined the band in 1989.

This will be an excellent market test of a niche product.

Box set? Check
Blu-ray audio? Check
Quad mixes? Check

just a bonus track or 2 on each album would have been the icing on the cake.

I can't get used to "Warner Records."

I know they had to do it because it is no longer a part of Time Warner, but why not just call it the "Warner Music Group," like it's referred to in the copyright notices on the back cover trays?

The Chicago Quadio box is fantastic, both the sound & packaging, so I imagine this will be great as well. Not sure how much a quad mix will bring out in these albums, whereas those Chicago albums worked really well with the extra channels. Hopefully the price will be reasonable when it's available through retail. How many other artists had multiple titles released in quad that might get this type of box set treatment in the future?

That new logo is absolutely dreadful. I can only imagine how much money was spent "designing" that abomination.

This should have been a niche product about five years back...and should be considered standard today. Blu-ray disc with high rez, full dynamic stereo mix + quad mix if available and if not available then new surround mix if the original tapes still survive and are in good enough condition. If they insist that music cannot sell unless it's LOUD enough, there is more than enough room to put both a "full dynamic master" plus a "shitty brickwalled master" on one Blu-ray disk. Time for the music industry to move into the 21st century instead of going back a hundred years.

Just call it Warner Music Group or even just Warner. Everyone knows who it is.

embarrassingly, i am once again going to show how little i really know about things.

from the questions i am too embarrassed to ask file:

"quadio" means what, exactly?

can i play these discs on my regular stereo? do i lose sound if i do so"? what do i need to experience the "full" effect of 'surround sound?

i read above that the quad needs a blu-ray player. true?

obviously i know very little about these things, so a "quad guide for dummies' is in order..........

thanks

Quadio is just a portmanteau word combining quadraphonic and stereo, because both types of mixes are included.

These are Blu-ray discs. You need a Blu-ray player to play them.

Both the original quad mixes and stereo mixes are on the Blu-rays. I'm assuming when you put the disk in the player a menu will pop up where you can select which mix you want to listen to. Quad mixes are 4 channel mixes, so you will need a four-speaker setup to listen to those mixes as intended.

I thought it combined quadraphonic and audio. Otherwise it would be "Quadeo".

I should have paid more attention to the spelling of quadio. Can't really figure out why they would combine quadraphonic and audio since quadraphonic implies audio?

I agree, but that's just what I thought. Marketing people aren't always concerned with accuracy so much as something catchy and memorable.
(And I am not really disagreeing with you, just throwing my take in there.)

The term "Quadio" started out being in-house shorthand for reissues of Quadraphonic albums on DVD and later BluRay.
It stuck.

So, sure, a portmanteau (like modem, brunch, podcast, etc.) for quadraphonic audio.

And I hope the product line continues!

I don't have surround, and I have all of these albums on MFSL SACDs, which sound fabulous.

These are all great recordings, so they should sound terrific in BluRay audio. They did a nice job with the Chicago Quadio box.

I have a DVD Audio of "The Captain and Me" released in 2001 by Warner Brothers and Rhino. The disc plays 4 ways: Advanced Resolution Surround Sound, Advanced Resolution Stereo, DVD-Video Compatible Dolby Digital Surround Sound, and DTS 5.1 Surround Sound, It is one of the best sounding surround sound albums I own. Really fantastic. It's like listening to a whole new album.

Amazon pre-order links haven't appeared yet, but the general release has been announced for November 6th. (Wait for that because the price will end up better.)

The Rhino store has the release date as 9/04/2020. The pre-order price there is 59.98. So, the general release date isn't until Nov. 6 for Amazon and retailers?
