in lieu of recent discussions.....

the question is: is there a 'functional' turntable hooked up to your system? (if you own one and it is not hooked up but in a box somewhere that does not count) (and, if yo have one hooked up but it does not work, or if you have no idea if it works, that does not count either)

Works & sounds fantastic. I've purchased more vinyl (mostly used) this year than I have in a long time.

I have an AR turntable which I have used since I bought it around 1983-'84, and my cartridge is a Sumiko Blue Point Special.

I also have an old Oracle that I picked up cheaply about ten years ago, and I only keeo it because it looks cool. I find it a pain to set up. But it does work.

I was a child of cassettes, and have absolutely no nostalgic attachment to that format. Vinyl's too bulky, and too pricey to build up a Power Metal collection at $40/ per plus shipping. So i'll stick to CD's.

I buy very little new vinyl, but I have about 3,500 LPs from before my switch to CD, so like to have something to play them on.

I’ve got a working 8-track player, and you dare to ask about a turntable?

I’ve had my Systemdek II (with Grace arm & cartridge) since 1983.
It never got much use back then because within a couple of years my migration to CD had begun.
I had it all properly set-up and realigned last year (I’d tried myself, what a botch job).
My newish (4 years old) integrated amp doesn’t have a phono section so in January of this year I bought a nice little Moon phono stage.
It’s now July and I’ve played exactly 2 records LOL, so the damn thing isn’t even broken in yet.

With all the vinyl on hand,I'll have a turntable as long as the vinyl holds out.

Yes. I have a Philips GA-312 that I bought around 1980. I'm not sure that I have used it this century, but every now and then I turn it on to make sure it still turn and it does.

Empire 598 Troubador. Bought it in 1971 I believe. Had to replace the drive belt once. Quite honestly it does not get a lot of use. Months could go by without me pulling out an LP to play on it. But it still looks good and it's still cooking.

I have never been without a functioning turntable since I bought my first stereo system in 1978 when I was 12. For most of that time I had an Onkyo that was pretty good but when it died about 6-7 years ago I bought a new Audio Technica turntable and I love it.

I recently purchased this Audio-Technica. Great player and it didn't break the bank.

I have a Rega RP1 with an aftermarket subplatter, acrylic platter, cork mat, counterweight, and 2mm tonearm spacer, and a Nagaoka MP-200 cartridge. My vintage NAD preamplifier has a phono input, but I'm running the turntable through a Lounge phono stage.

No. I was looking at Rega a few years back, in the range of a Rega 6, and ended up deciding to completely throw away the idea. Just too many reports of bad vinyl pressings. I can still remember when they were doing the big Zeppelin reissue campaign and how they completely botched Houses of the Holy and how many bad reviews there were about Zeppelin IV. I mean, if "the industry" can't get it right with something as high-profile as Led Zeppelin...how can I rely on them to get me even decent pressings of so many of the less popular artists that I listen too? Dump $2000 into a turntable, then end up paying $50 for a 55-minute album that of course has to be spread to 2 slabs of vinyl for maximum sound quality, er, umm, actually maximum profits for the record company. And every time I buy an album, I'm walking in a minefield not knowing if I'll get something that sounds decent or if I will step into a surface noise, off-center pressing, inner groove distortion nightmare. At least when I buy a CD I can just expect to get a brickwalled mess, but at least I can get my brickwalled mess for anywhere from 20% - 50% of what I would pay for vinyl.

Historically I've purchased about 150-200 CDs a year but this year has been way down as there is just not much older catalog I'm interested in anymore. Maybe I'm too old, a real possibility. Or maybe I've grown tired of being sold inferior product for so many years. My Blu-ray buying has probably increased about 400%. I think if the music industry has any chance of really pulling me back in, it's time for them to put full-dynamic, high-rez music on Blu-ray.

One of my favorite things on the internet....heading to the Hoffman forum and seeing someone in a complete rage because Amazon will no longer let he/she exchange a vinyl album 10 times until he/she finally gets a copy that they can live with. And sure enough, three posts later that same person will rave about how vinyl is best format there is for music.

My turntable - at least from appearances - seems to be identical to yours. It's a Technics SL-1200MK2, which I've had for many years. It is almost certainly the last turntable I will ever own, and while I rarely use it these days, I could not imagine ever being "turntableless". There are still LPs (and 45s!!) in my collection that I haven't found on CD, so I'll always need a turntable when I want to play those.

I had thousands of vinyl records and multiple turntables (...and a mixing board, used to DJ on occasion) but I found the convenience of CDs much more appealing, not having to deal with pops and crackles anymore. I still kept the vinyl until albums were reissued on CD, title by title. Then, 16 years ago, we had a basement flood while we were on vacation and thousands of records were destroyed. The ones that survived, I mostly got rid of. I only have a couple of book boxes of records now. If I want to hear something that I only have on vinyl, I pay someone with a professional system and the patience and convert the vinyl to CD. I can't see myself ever pulling out a turntable again. From CDs to HD downloads, not to mention blu ray, I'm happy with the quality. I've never been one that believed that vinyl sounds better than these other formats. That's just my personal opinion.

Got off the vinyl train many years ago (once owned a Sansui direct drive turntable) but went all in on SACD/DVDA/CD etc as I really enjoy home theater and surround sound. Maybe one day I will add a turntable once again as I do still have albums but the kids would have to leave and that ain’t happening at the moment.

I am amazed that so many people are still vinyl happy.

My son John with one of Jimmy’s boxes of 45s. He listens to each record one by one. He only has 14 more of the boxes to go. As I was taking the picture he said “ Dad that is a new group for me. I love both songs”. He means A side and B side I guess. (But New Edition? Almost kicked him out of the house.)

Audio Technica LP120XUSB I think. He got it for Christmas from uncle Mickey.
