Between Hard Travelling Heroes, the JLA run, and the Batman stuff, he had a huge impact on my youth.

RIP, Denny...

I have fond memories of Denny and Neal Adams Green Lantern/Green Arrow.

Same here. I started reading comics during the O'Neil/Adams era and those comics helped mold my perception of Batman.

Whether as writer and/or editor, I read a lot of his stories.

Rest well, Mr. O'Neil.

He mentored Frank Milller as the editor on Daredevil, I believe. Miller says he taught him how to write. O'Neil then wrote Daredevil from when Miller left the first time until he returned to do "Born Again." He kind of bridged the gap. That run is kind of underrated because everyone focuses on the Miller stuff that brackets it, but it's solid. The first David Mazzacelli-illustrated issues are written by O'Neil. And the latter part of that run is, I think, deliberately written in order to finesse that status quo into how Miller wanted it when he started "Born Again."

Nocenti, another Daredevil hero, also credits O'Neil as a mentor. So part of my affection for him is for his writing on DD, but also for his work as an editor, who fostered at least two neophyte comics visionaries and helped them to become literate in how to construct a comics story.

He's also got a great interview in The Comics Journal with lots of interesting talk on about the nuts and bolts of comics writing. He wasn't an Eisner or Moore or Kirby -- even he would have admitted that -- but he was very smart and articulate about the comics craft. And, admittedly, part of my affection comes from nostalgia, since I had a lot of his DD comics as a kid, and I read them over and over back then.

Thanks for the in-depth reply. Did you like his Batman? The stuff he did with Neal is the only stuff I really love, and it’s probably more for Neal than Denny.
