Description
Compilation featuring hits and rarities from the White Whale catalog, featuring artists like Warren Zevon's first band Lyme & Cybelle, Jim Ford, JK & Co, Nino Tempo & April Stevens, and more. The album chronicles 5 years of psych-pop sounds that came out of Los Angeles' White Whale Records, most known for being the label of The Turtles. While The Turtles topped the charts, many White Whale gems slipped through the cracks, each getting their much deserved time under the spotlight in this release.

Andrew Sandoval produced this set and tweeted extensively about it here a few weeks ago...

Too bad, I need releases like this one to district me from the world outside. Although, it's a good excuse to work my way through the stockpile of music I've amassed but haven't properly listened to yet...!!

The Laughing Gravy (track 9) is actually Dean Torrance of Jan & Dean. There is a debate as to whether Brian Wilson also contributed backing vocals to the single.

I've always been confused by the fact that there are apparently two recordings of this track, made a few years apart, that sound near-identical. For example, it appears on this 2003 compilation, billed as the original 1967 version, but I've heard some say it's the remake from 1972. And I believe Brian only sings on one version (the 1972 one, I think?).

That said, Pet Projects is a fantastic compilation.

My understanding (from years as a big Jan & Dean fan) is that Dean and some studio musicians (possibly including Brian W., but unconfirmed) recorded the original White Whale single version. Additional production (definitely involving Brian W. this time) was done to the original White Whale master for inclusion on "The Jan & Dean Anthology Album" in 1971. That "new" version was also released as a single (United Artists 50859) to promote that album.

The tweaked 1971 version is what has appeared on compilations ever since, often being erroneously credited as the original White Whale single. Even Varese Sarabande's "The Dean Torrence Anthology: Legendary Masked Surfer Unmasked" from 2002 included the 1971 version but labeled it as the original 1967 single version.

However, the version on this new compilation was confirmed on a Jan & Dean message board to indeed be the original White Whale single version. It is possibly the first time that version has appeared on CD.

Ahhhh, now this makes a lot of sense - so I've only heard the 1971 version, but that version isn't a remake, rather just a touch-up.

Now I'm looking forward to this comp even more. Thanks!

And this is why this board continues to rock. Thank you for this invaluable information.

And now it's June 26th again. Somebody at Craft has turned to alcohol during the lockdown.

I just received this today and spinning it for the first time. I am not familiar with any of these songs other then the Laughing Gravy's "Vegetables" but there are a lot of great tracks. Some folk rock and garage tracks as well as the psych pop, very L.A. pop of the era. Andrew Sandoval contributes his usual excellent notes for each track. Recommended.

edit: I also knew the Clique's "Superman", didn't notice it when looking over the track list. It's nice to have a good copy of that song. Also interesting to see The Rockets, a band that included three members who would later go on to become Neil Young's Crazy Horse.

I've only listened on streaming so far, but I'm really enjoying - tons of memorable singles (and like Jason, the only song I knew beforehand was "Vegetables").

I'll pick up the CD shortly for the liners, no question. A really nice set.
