Description
Hate For Sale, produced by the revered Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur), is the latest studio album by The Pretenders due for release on May 1st 2020 via BMG. The album features 10 new songs written collaboratively by Chrissie Hynde and the electrifyingly dynamic guitarist James Walbourne, in what is the first Hynde/Walbourne song writing collaboration to date.

Speaking about writing with James for the first time, Chrissie said: “I wanted to write with him since day one. James is especially sought after and has recorded with Jerry Lee Lewis, Dave Gahan, and The Rails, to name but a few. We always planned on writing while on the road, but as anyone in a band will tell you, being on tour is a procrastinator's dream come true”.

The Pretenders most recent album, 2016’s Alone (produced by Dan Auerbach), was a critical success and a welcome return for the line-up, coming eight years after 2008’s Break Up The Concrete. The band supported Fleetwood Mac on their UK stadium tour in June 2019, which included two shows at Wembley Stadium.

Tracklist
1. Hate For Sale
2. The Buzz
3. Lightning Man
4. Turf Accountant Daddy
5. You Can't Hurt A Fool
6. I Didn't Know When To Stop
7. Maybe Love Is In NYC
8. Junkie Walk
9. Didn't Want To Be This Lonely
10. Crying In Public

Chrissie Hynde talked a little about the next Pretenders album as part of a Billboard interview for her new solo release Valve Bone Woe:

Quote:
Meanwhile she's gearing up for a 2020 release for the Pretenders next album, a follow-up to 2016's Alone, with some extensive touring planned for the band as well.

"It's very, very Pretenders," Hynde reports. "It's got a very wide-ranging mix of songs. There's one that sort of sounds like the Specials, kind of a reggae thing. There’s something that's more like a Lou Rawls ballad. We've got something with a strong quartet which is more of a tender ballad. We've got some Gary Glitter-esque kind of rockers. It's ready and just waiting for (Bone Valve Woe) to come out, so I feel like I'm in a holding pattern. It's a good problem to have, but I'm sort of champing at the bit here, too."

Our thread for Chrissie's solo album can be found here:

What difference is there between a Hynde solo album and a Pretenders album at this point?

There hasn't been a true band record in over a decade.

No difference. I read an interview a while back where Chrissie states that she would prefer to just release music under her own name, but admits that the Pretenders brand is more identifiable and marketable, which is why it is still used. "Valve Bone Woe" was an exception presumably because it is so far out of what people expect from a Pretenders release, but I imagine anything pop/rock will be released under the Pretenders name.

FWIW, Martin Chambers still tours with her. He and his mutton chops were there when I saw her open for Stevie Nicks a couple of years ago.

As I understand it, she uses session drummers for the albums and Chambers for the live gigs.

Not sure why this is the case.

Excellent song. I will buy it whenever it winds up being released. I'm pretty sure the May 1st date will be changed.
If not, great!

I truly regret asking this, but I do so kindly...

You bash Journey for existing, but Chrissy Hynde solo albums with the Pretenders name you are just fine with?

She doesn’t even let Martin Chambers play on the albums.

What is the difference here?

steve perry WAS journey, no need to look further than album sales and song popularity before and after perry. perry could tour and just do journey songs and he would sell out every show. as i said to you before, if journey toured today and said that would not play a single steve perry, song on the entire tour. the tour would not go on, ticket sales would be non-existent. neal schon should send steve perry flowers every day to thank him for being in his band for so long..perry gave schon the life he leads, abraxas pool, bad english, azteca, jann hammer, HSAS, hardline, just if i, soul sirkus and even paul rogers and santana could have never given him what steve perry gave him. actually, without steve perry i really and truly don't know if anyone in the whole wide world, other than hard core fans, would even know who neal schon is.

chrissie hynde IS the pretenders, and she really makes no bones about it, not trying to fool anyone at all. i can't even imagine a pretenders album or tour without her. if hynde toured solo and said she was only going to play pretenders songs she would sell out.i would generalize by saying that pretenders albums have a bit harder edge than chrissie hynde solo albums.BTW, i think 'stockholm' is really good

sorry this was so long, but you got fired up....again. IP, you have a way of doing that. :)
