i had a used copy of 'one night alone' in my hands once long ago (reasonably priced too) and i did not pull the trigger, and i still regret it to this day......i must ask, is the the original box set + : or just the original box set re-issued?

The new box's CDs 2, 3, & 4 are the contents of the original One Nite Alone...Live! box. The first disc was only released through Prince's fan club as One Nite Alone... for individual purchase or included as a bonus for people who bought the box through his club. As a result, it is a rarer item in his catalog. The DVD was released separately as Prince Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas. I'll be picking up the box for the first disc.

I've never heard any of this despite being a fan. Was not a member of his fan club and historically have avoided most live albums.

That said, I will probably pick this up.

Just to expand on what Jason already said, disc 1 is studio and is mostly just voice and piano. There are drums on a couple songs and some other background vocalists but it is considered a vocal + piano album.

Disc four in this set is termed "The Aftershow" and is pretty legendary among the die-hards who routinely cite it as being an absolute highlight of Prince's discography. It is the main reason I am interested in this set even though I am not big on most live albums.

Agreed that the Aftershow set is the highlight of this collection! I initially thought the DVD seemed like an out of place inclusion, but it actually fits in terms of Prince's touring lineup circa 2002.

(Looks like I'd better hurry and flip my sealed copy of the original 3CD release. 8-)
