Description
The much anticipated deluxe edition of the iconic album by the British legends of experimental rock Porcupine Tree

Featuring remastered stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes, additional studio recordings, a disc of unreleased demos and a new feature length Lasse Hoile directed documentary on Blu-ray.

This new deluxe version of In Absentia provides an unrivalled insight into the context of the seminal album. The first CD features Steven Wilson's 2017 remaster, which has considerably less compression and limiting for a more dynamic listening experience. The second CD includes all of the additional finished studio recordings the band made during the period. "Collapse (intro)", "Drown With Me", "Chloroform", and "Meantime" were all recorded during the album sessions in New York, while "Futile" and "Orchidia" come from the post-album promo-only Futile EP. Radio edits of "Trains", "Blackest Eyes" and "Strip the Soul" are also included. The third CD comprises over 70 minutes of demos recorded at Wilson's home studio during the two years leading up to recording the album. Many of the selections differ from the final versions, with additional sections, alternate lyrics, and different arrangements. Also included are demos of three songs that were not subsequently recorded by the band, all released here for the first time: "Imogen Slaughter", "Watching You Sleep", and "Enough". The Blu-ray features the new master of the original stereo mix, the 5.1 surround sound mix created in 2003 by legendary engineer Elliot Scheiner, plus the audio from the second CD, all in high resolution audio. It also boasts a new 109-minute feature length documentary film directed by Lasse Hoile, chronicling the making of the album with interviews and archive footage.

The 100-page deluxe hardback book is filled with exclusive content, including photography by Lasse Hoile, Carl Glover, Richard Barbieri and John Blackford from the recording sessions, subsequent tour and more, extensive biographical liner notes and track-by-track commentary by Stephen Humphries, artwork drafts, and handwritten notes and lyrics. This deluxe reissue of Porcupine Tree's best-loved album follows the release of Steven Wilson's fifth solo album, To The Bone, which soared into the UK Album Charts at #3 and #2 in the German album charts and led to a sold-out tour including 3 shows at London's Royal Albert Hall. Meanwhile Gavin Harrison is enjoying success touring the world with both King Crimson and The Pineapple Thief after performing on the latter's latest album Dissolution, keyboardist Richard Barbieri recently released a box set collection of pieces Variants, and Colin Edwin issued the latest studio album with his band O.R.k., titled Ramagehead, featuring Serj Tankian of System of a Down.

I bought the DVD-Audio version of this in the early 2000s for the DTS surround sound mix, and it's still one of the best 5.1 albums I've ever heard. I'm glad others who missed that release will get to hear it via this box set. I hope the price comes down as I would love to get the bonus material, but can't justify spending $100 on this set. Of course I may change my mind as the release date nears, as I said the same thing about the latest Pink Floyd box set and it's currently sitting in front of me.

It is the best thing Porcupine Tree produced

The only problem with the DVD-A is it was mastered a bit on the loud side......the Blu ray will be mastered flat.

I'd like this. It's a bit out of my price range.

It's now listed as a February 28th release in both the USA and UK:

Amazon USA
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082QFYW6R/?tag=imwan-20

Amazon UK
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B082QFYW6R/?tag=imwan-21

(The USA listing will probably change to March 6th soon, since this release is a UK import.)

Emailed today from Burning Shed:

Hi,

Thanks very much for buying this deluxe edition of one of PT’s classic albums from us.

We have been made aware of an unfortunate mistake on the Blu-ray disc. It should have included the audio from CD2 in high resolution (24/96) but those tracks/files are not there.

Obviously we are eager for you to have a complete Blu-Ray disc but this is going to take a few weeks as a new master and manufacturing will take time.

The “good” part is that you don’t have to do anything. We will automatically send a replacement Blu-ray to everyone who has bought this from us.

Kscope are sorry for this mishap but please rest assured it will all be ok - you’re in good hands.

We will email you again when the discs are about to be shipped.

Please note that all replacement discs will be sent by standard mail without tracking. We won’t be sending any discs by courier.

Anyone who bought the deluxe edition from other sellers will need to contact Kscope directly about getting a replacement disc. Watch their social media accounts for more information.

Kind regards

Lisa

Nice that they are automatically sending us the corrected Blu-ray. Reviews so far on the set have been positive, the sound is vastly improved.

Got my deluxe set today and the box looked like it had been in a fight as it traveled over from Europe. Luckily it was double boxed so my set is fine. Gorgeous packaging but I won’t get a chance to listen till later.

Got another email today from Burning Shed, the corrected Blu-rays are now in stock and will go out automatically soon, they will also replace any sets on hand with the corrected version. I will assume patience will be the key as it will take some time for the discs to arrive in North America.

People not on the automatic mailing list should make sure they have contacted K-Scope to make sure they get their corrected Blu-Rays.

My initial email from K Scope mentioned discs in April but delays have moved it to now late April/ early May. The pandemic has screwed everything up but I am confident I will eventually get the replacement disc.
