He seems to have gotten into a stylistic rut over his last few albums. I liked when every release seemed to explore a different style. I suppose I can't expect him to do that for his entire career. I will still pick this up.

I totally agree. He's not very idiosyncratic anymore.

Did you guys even listen to his last few albums?
Modern Guilt (sample heavy), Morning Phase (folk) and Colors (dance rock) are about as disparate in style as one can imagine.
And if he decided to follow up Colors with another one mostly like it, I wouldn't mind, because while it may not have been his most artistically significant release ever, I do think it was certainly the most listenable record he's ever done.

I have listened to them all, and really don't find them to sound as different as you do. For me, all three are pop-inflected folk. I do agree that Colors is his most listenable album. It goes down reeeal smooth.

On Odelay, every track explored a different style. I'll confess, though, I never heard Colors, so I'll have to rectify that soon. From what you guys are saying it sounds like something I might like.

I loved Colors, saw the tour and remember trying to turn Jimbo onto the album one night when I played tracks from it on my car stereo. It’s one of those albums that instantly puts a smile on your face. In fact I would rank it as one of the best of 2017 (it was released late in Oct 17 so it qualifies as a 2018’ listen too).

I find this perception to be baffling. There is absolutely no hint of folk on Colors. But OK, whatever.
I just revisited Colors to see if I was missing anything. This is, top-to-bottom, a dance album. Not hearing any folk, inflected or not. Still not crazy about this, as I prefer when Beck shows his folk roots.

Been listening to this pretty extensively over the last week or so. I'd say this is thematically very similar to Sea Change, and the lyrics are pretty on the nose about the end of his marriage.
"Hyperspace" refers to the button in Atari's Asteroids used to escape crushing death.
Musically, it's synthy-er than Sea Change, and is heavily indebted to his collaboration with Pharrell Williams.
Saw Lightning is a real hoot, but the rest is pretty mellow. Uneventful Days is a real highlight, and a gut-punch of resignation.
Not the album I was hoping for, but it was the album he needed to do, and a worthy addition to his catalog.
