This is the thread to pitch which things would be good candidates for a remake.

I started the thread because I really believe Logan's Run should be remade. Great story, great names for things, and the main limitation of the first one is that it has a style that seems dated (70's porn).

I was just thinking the other day that the 1954 movie of Them! should be remade, but with
using smaller (kitten to dog-sized) ants, and differing varieties of ants. Swarms of big (but
not giant) ants could be damn nasty,

And there could be a climax with a big huge one.

There's a made for Netflix out with a spider that's about the size of a dog out now. Really creepy. It's called Itsy Bitsy.

Eight Legged Freaks was Them! with giant spiders of varying sizes. I remember liking it at the time it came out.

I agree that Logans' Run should be remade.

I'll try and think of something remake-worthy.

A lot of uproar lately at the idea of a Princess Bride remake.

What Princess Bride really needs is for someone to REMAKE the audio book version of the book.
The current offering is only a brief ABRIDGED copy of the novel. They need to the whole damn book.

Krull...I think there are a lot of cool concepts there that weren't explored properly. And modern special effects would do a lot of good.

The Hobbit...I need a version of that that isn't 9 hours long.

I wouldn't mind seeing Christina Ricci play Wednesday Addams, grown up and as the new matriarch of her weird family. Maybe make it more supernatural, too. Ghosts of some past family members, like grand ma ma, though Morticia and Gomez are still alive, they would only occasionally visit Wednesday's home. Uncle Pugsley could be around like Fester used to be. Lurch, though old, would be with her. Thing and It, too. I wonder what they could do with that.

Oh yeah, I saw something of that - the old comic strip style. But I don't know if it will be any good or not yet.

I was thinking more live action, non animated, and going deeper into their family weirdness and the source of it - probably supernatural stuff. Fun times.

What I'd Really like to see is some of Ed Wood's movies done as the movies he'd intended. (Good actors, a budget, a cleaned up story, etc.) Plan 9 is terrible, but there's a good idea floating around in there.

When Worlds Collide (1951):

There were plans 10 years ago to remake it but they fell through. One of the better ‘end of the world’ sci-fi movies ever.

Roger Ebert once said something like, "They really shouldn't bother remaking movies that were already excellent the first time around, they will only suffer in comparison. They should remake movies that could have been good, had good ideas or concepts, but never really quite came together."

It wasn't the greatest premise ever, but I really would love to see a big budget remake of YOR: THE HUNTER FROM THE FUTURE.

Spoiler: show
He was a wandering barbarian that would run into tribes of other barbarians, then protect them from dinosaurs and underground troll people. He later found out that he was orphaned as a kid, that he came from a futuristic society of people hidden from the barbarians and ruled by an evil dictator type, who is experimenting with eugenics and building a race of androids. He teams up with an underground group of rebels who want to overthrow the evil dude, they do, and then he leads them into joining the outside world.

Again, nothing incredible -- but it'd be fun.

That was a pretty good comment by Ebert.
I'd like to see more of THAT.

The world needs a blockbuster, world dominating remake of Laser Blast.

I've always felt that the recent American Godzilla movies should just remake key seventies Japanese versions. Take liberties, sure, but build on those story structures the way Marvel movies build on the comics. There's ridiculous stuff in those movies but also amazing things, like in Destroy All Monsters or Godzilla vs. Hedorah.

Seconded.

Also, they should remake Zardoz. :ohyes:

A corollary to this theory is when an excellent movie would benefit from the latest special effects, because at the time it was made computer imaging didn't exist. There are many movies that were successful artistic creations by the standard of their era, but for which the world they depict could be more convincingly made.

Obviously, I'm referring to live action Space Ghost.

I think part of the problem is that remakes can never recapture the spirit of the times in which the original was made. Whenever they remake a classic they feel the need to take artistic licence and 're-imagine' aspects of it that steer it in a different direction. Like the environmental angle replacing the arms race thing in the 2008 version of Day The Earth Stood Still (which changes the whole dynamic), or like that 2002 version of The Time Machine with Guy Pearce, Jeremy Irons and Samantha Mumba; it harks back to some of Wells' ideas from some of his other novels, but doesn't manage to capture any of the aspects from the Rod Taylor one that made it a classic nor any of the things about the actual novel that made it so interesting to begin with. They have to make it into 'New Coke' and mess with the recipe.

They're not bad movies, they just lack the 'purity of essence' that the beloved originals somehow have. A remake that's as good as an original, or that takes it in another direction without wrecking the concept, is rare. John Carpenter's The Thing is a good example - it's an update, and it veers away from Howard Hawks' one significantly, but does so in a creative way. Neither film suffers by comparison because they're both classics in their own right for different reasons.
