Horror movie icon Sid Haig has died at age 80.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sid at a pop culture convention a few years ago. He wasn't well then, and I don't remember if I got a picture with him or not, but he was a great guy to have a conversation with. I was lucky enough to get to chat with him for several minutes because there was no one behind me.

If you haven't seen it, his appearance on the menu on the DVD version of House Of 1000 Corpses is fantastic. He was great as Captain Spaulding in the movie, and that carried over to the menu bit as well.

He was supposed to be in 3 From Hell, but his health forced Rob Zombie to rewrite the role to a much smaller part. He was only in the film for about 2 minutes or so, but he delivered a good performance given his health issues.

RIP, Sid.

Actor Sid Haig, best known as maniacal clown Captain Spaulding or "Cutter" from Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses and its follow-up The Devil's Rejects, has died at the age of 80. His death was made public Monday (Sept. 23) by his spouse, Susan L. Oberg, in the form of an Instagram update.

Haig — born Sidney Eddie Mosesian on July 14, 1949 — had been hospitalized earlier this month after experiencing an unspecified "accident," as Entertainment Weekly reported. He died last Saturday (Sept. 21). See Oberg's heartfelt statement down toward the bottom of this post.

"On Saturday, September 21, 2019, my light, my heart, my true love, my King, the other half of my soul, Sidney, passed from this realm on to the next," she said. "He has returned to the Universe, a shining star in her heavens."

She continued, "He was my angel, my husband, my best friend and always will be. He adored his family, his friends and his fans. This came as a shock to all of us. We, as a family, are asking that our privacy and time to mourn be respected."

"Horray for Captain Spaulding," Zombie shared on Instagram. "Gone but not forgotten." The rocker also added a group photo with Sid, along with a lengthier tribute on his Facebook page, as seen below.

Two weeks ago, it appeared that Haig had fallen at home. Around that time, Oberg wrote on Haig's Instagram account that her husband had been in an accident, but she didn’t offer further details. A now-deleted comment from Sept. 13 stated the actor was "winning the fight" after taking a "nasty spill."

Haig makes an appearance in Zombie's new 3 From Hell, the long-awaited continuation of the murderous Firefly family's outlaw escapades. In addition to acting in most of Zombie's films, Haig appeared in over 75 movies throughout his lifetime including George Lucas' THX 1138, Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown and Kill Bill: Volume Two, and last year's non-zombie horror pic Death House. In the '60s, Haig began his acting career with parts on TV shows such as Batman, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

R.I.P. Mr. Haig.
My favourite of his films is Jack Hill's mid 60s flick, Spider Baby. Truly a unique, campy, yet weird gem.

It was neat when he'd show up in a role. I remember him as a Knig Tut henchman in Batman, and as a hobo in Emperor of the north.
He seemed like a really cool guy.
