Description
The latest chapter in the highly acclaimed Bob Dylan Bootleg Series revisits Dylan's pivotal musical journeys to Nashville, from 1967 to 1969, focusing on previously unavailable recordings made with Johnny Cash and unreleased tracks from the John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, and Self Portrait sessions. Disc 1 finds Dylan in Columbia's Studio A in Nashville recording alternate versions of compositions written for John Wesley Harding (October 17 and November 6, 1967) and Nashville Skyline (February 13-14, 1969) while introducing a new song "Western Road" (a Nashville Skyline outtake). Discs 2 and 3 are centered around Dylan's collaborations with American music icon Johnny Cash including the much sought-after Columbia Studio A sessions and on-stage performances at the Ryman Auditorium (May 1, 1969) for the recording of the premiere episode of The Johnny Cash Show (originally broadcast on ABC-TV on June 7, 1969). Disc 3 closes with tracks recorded on May 17, 1970 with Grammy Award-winning bluegrass banjo legend Earl Scruggs for the PBS television special, "Earl Scruggs: His Family and Friends" (originally aired January 1971).

Somewhat speculative, but we might as well open a thread for it now:

Quote:
Bob Dylan Plotting Coffeehouse Years Collection for Future Bootleg Series

Bob Dylan’s More Blood, More Tracks: The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 doesn’t arrive until November 2nd, but his team is already thinking about their next archival release. While nothing is confirmed, the singer’s team is most excited at a future Bootleg Series spotlighting his pre-fame days as a coffeehouse performer in New York’s Greenwich Village.

“We’ve wanted to do a Bootleg Series on Bob’s earliest performances for a long time,” says a source close to the Bob Dylan camp. “For decades we’ve been collecting tapes from the time before he began making official recordings. I think it would be really interesting to go through those. We’ll probably call it something like The Villager.”

Recordings from his era have been circulating within fan circles for decades, most notably a trio of tapes that Dylan’s girlfriend Bonnie Beecher and his friend Tony Glover created between May and December of 1961. The vast majority of songs in his set at the time were covers like “Baby Please Don’t Go,” “I Ain’t Go No Home” and “Man of Constant Sorrow.” “We have some beautiful-sounding tapes that nobody has ever heard,” says the source. “Or if they have, we have first generation tapes.”

Also under consideration is a Bootleg Series chronicling the creation of Dylan’s 1997 comeback album Time Out of Mind. “It would be really fun to reexamine that period,” says the source. “There’s tons of material even though we used some of it on [the 2008 Bootleg Series] Tell Tale Signs. There’s different versions of songs on the album, early versions…It’s a robust collection of stuff, so we’re thinking about doing it.”

Last year, Dylan’s gospel period of 1979 to 1981 was the subject of a Bootleg Series. A future set might tell the story of what happened in the immediate aftermath. “We might do something that reexamines the early 1980s,” says the source. “It’ll be about the period between Shot of Love and Infidels. There’s still a lot to explore there.”

A European copyright law that says recordings enter the public domain if they’re unused for 50 years has forced the Dylan camp to release nearly everything in the vault from 1965 to 1967, and it may compel them to release even more going forward. “The [1969] Johnny Cash sessions will probably wind up coming out in 2019,” says the source. “Maybe if people want them, they’ll be a Bootleg Series. There’s a couple of tracks that nobody has heard that are really interesting. I just don’t love them because they change the keys of the songs.”

A documentary about the 1975/76 Rolling Thunder tour has been in the works for nearly a decade. “We’re hoping it comes out next year,” says the source.

How about a Bootleg Series focusing on the Never Ending Tour, which celebrated its 30th anniversary back in June? “We’re thinking about something like that,” says the source. “That would be fun.” A sequel to Dylan’s 2005 book Chronicles: Volume One? “No idea,” says the source. “That would be great though.”

Broadly speaking, there’s no master plan when it comes to plotting out future archival Dylan releases. “What happens is we start listening to tapes,” says the source. “We see what gets us excited. Once you get excited you can start digging, which is what happened with the gospel collection. We’ll only stop doing them once we stop finding things that excites us.”

You have to wonder if Dylan's camp isn't thinking like the Stones have been, and are trying to get out as much physical product as possible before the format goes away.

Semi-related note: I stopped by Best Buy the other day to pick up a copy of "Solo," and not only were there no CD's for sale, the CD shelves were literally empty--as in, Best Buy apparently didn't ditch CD's in order to free up shelf space. They did have some vinyl, however.

I'll happily buy the coffeehouse, Rolling Thunder, and Johnny Cash sessions in the same year.

Interesting thing this morning on SiriusXM's Volume channel on the Playback program they played Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan recording a cover[not sure which song though]at about 7:15am[if anyone else was listening at that time maybe you can remember what song it was].......hopefully that song'll end up on this set.

Oh my goodness! There's been heavy speculation about this on Dylan boards recently. They were correct. This'll be another great one.

I heard " Girl From The North Country" this morning around that time. They played other Dylan but I didn't hear anything else with Cash.

The Dylan and Cash sessions have been a long favourite of mine on bootleg. Although this is a cherished CD there are several awful songs that were obviously never intended to released commercially. I will be surprised if they are included.
Bob is clearly embarrassed with his interpretation of One Too many Mornings and Ring Of Fire.
Despite their quirkyness I love them.

A couple of the 1969 Dylan/Cash collaborations have popped up on Cash releases over the years, such as video clips on a DVD anthology of the "Johnny Cash Show."

Slightly odder is a studio duet of "One Too Many Mornings", which was filmed and included in a vintage PBS documentary on Cash; on the 2012 "Chimes Of Freedom" comp, Bob's vocals were mixed down, with the Avett Brothers overdubbed new vocals to duet with Cash.

The Cash session has circulated for years, however. The real mystery is what else is coming out of the vault--presumably "John Wesley Harding" and "Nashville Skyline" outtakes. An alternate take of "Lay Lady Lay" was an I-tunes bonus track with preorders of "Together Through Life" back in 2009. Yes, I bought it, and I'm glad I did, because the track did indeed vanish completely from Itunes after the album was released, never to return. I'd like to finally have it on a CD.

What a great time to be a Dylan fan--there has probably been something like a total of around a hundred different discs of Dylan's music released just in the past five years.
