There are a few people who attribute some of Byrne's appeal to his collaborations with Terry Austin. So I wanted to see what Terry looked like with other pencillers.

Larsen-bashing aside, Austin is freaking awesome. Back when I was a li'l tyke still trying to get a sense of how to recognize funnybook artists and writers by their style, I read some of that Marshall Rogers Batman run and was like, hey, this looks like that Claremont/Byrne X-Men I like so much. This must be John Byrne! Then I read the credits and realized Austin was the common factor, and got a lesson in how important the inking is to the overall look of a comics page.

Austin was my favorite inker in the 70s-early 80s. Such a clean line, and didn't obscure the penciller's style.
