In a Rolling Stone article about the long-promised Kinks reunion album, Dave Davies also mentioned that a superdeluxed 50th anniversary box of Arthur is coming in October to make our Christmas season especially merry. Said Dave, "It's a really, really interesting package that's going to have other songs from that time period like 'Hold My Hand'."

When I lived up in the N.J. mountains I lived in a two townhouse home with a neighbor who would travel for extended periods of time which allowed to me to rock as often and as loud as I liked.

He actually was a very cool guy and when he returned from those long hauls he play consistently the album "Arthur". Played it so often he converted me. I hope he is still around so he can enjoy the expanded Anniversary edition as would I.

I've added some details to Linda's opening post.

Now, here's the first sample from this release:

That sounds great, but that can't be from 1969, can it? That sounds like modern Ray's voice.

Another website had this, from what they say is the official press release:
"It also includes Ray Davies’ compiled medley of unreleased demo tracks, 2 new recordings of Ray Davies with The Doo Wop Choir, ‘Arthur & The Emigrants’ including one previously unreleased track, 3 previously unreleased ‘The Come Dancing Workshop Ensemble’ tracks, and new Ray Davies remixes of ‘Australia’ and ‘Shangri-La’."

I bought the 2disc version of VGPS, not the full box. Partly because I have the older 3disc, partly because I don't want the non-CD elements in my crowded apartment, and partly because I don't like bulking up track lists with material from other eras I.e. The Preservation and RD solo stuff).
Looks like I will stick with the lovely old 2disc Arthur...

Comparing the track list of the 4 CDs to my Arthur 2 CD deluxe edition, the Kinks at the BBC 6 CD set, and Dave Davies' Hidden Treasures CD, I don't see enough to warrant a purchase for me. And I'll have to do a closer comparison, but I'm not sure the box has 28 alternate tracks I don't already have. I was pretty excited about this set, but again, they seem to be padding these boxes with items I have little use for. I see this deluxe set can be ordered from the Kinks store for $130.38, or the 2 CD set for $23.15. If they sold me the 4 CDs with a booklet for $49.99 I would buy them.

They forgot to do market research at my house.

And that's where they made their mistake!

In general, as Jason said, "they seem to be padding these boxes with items I have little use for", including yada, yada. The Deluxe Set is now $89.99, and the 2-disc set is $15.98. I have the Arthur 2-CD Deluxe Edition from 2011, plus the BBC sets. With those I'm good to go without this new box set. Gotta save my $$$$ for the Neil Young Archives, Volumes 2, 3, and 4.

No links except Amazon in the threads, please. (And it will end up least expensive there anyway.)

Variety has a good rundown of what's included and when it was recorded, with some quotes:

https://www.variety.com/2019/music/news ... 1203285669

To the above, WAN must add that Pete Quaife's last recordings with the group are there, and Dave Davies' solo album is about as complete as it's ever likely to be (and in fact more complete than the original would have been had it been released in its day).

Interesting quote from the critic, but when did the Kinks ever perform like a bunch of old ladies?

Quote:
" ...the most attractive part of the box for some fans may be the reconstruction of a never-released Dave Davies solo album the brother were working on in that era before setting the whole idea aside.
“Hearing Dave’s songs again after all this time,” Ray says in the liner notes, “I found them quite moving because they were like the back story of what the Kinks were going through at the time.”

I think what irks me is the marketing on this set is misleading- calling the Dave Davies solo album unreleased is simply not true since it came out in 2011. And I am sure Ray listened to the tracks then as he seems to be very hands on as to what is released from the band's archives.

Unsurprisingly, the article cites an unnamed Rolling Stone critic for that comment.

In the first post, the 2CD and 2LP configurations are now available for pre-order from Amazon UK.

I am going to get the two cd version first and after Christmas I will see who offers the box at a great price.

Need to save my money for Floyd.
