One of the roughly half-dozen or so previously published, full-length Joplin biographies was written by her sister, Laura Joplin. (A member of Janis Joplin's family)

If memory serves, the first chapter of her book was a thoroughly boring multi-generational genealogical overview of the Joplin family tree.

Maybe they meant "unprecedented access" given to an actual writer.
