The Blues Brothers is one of the greatest movies ever made.
Were he alive today, John Belushi would be doing serious movie roles that delight critics and bore audiences.

I voted for the Blues Broters - very funny film - though I really did like the more serious drama, Continental Divide, too.

I voted for Animal House, both because it's a personal favorite, and because it's a tremendous cultural artifact as well as a hilarious comedy. Even though its an ensemble, Belushi dominates every scene he's in, and even when offscreen his spirit overpowers the proceedings like a benevolent bacchanalia demigod; he's as much of a part of the setting as Faber College itself. It's a great use of his talents.
I think Belushi would have pursued more drama and possibly built the kind of career we associate with Bill Murray. During his time of SNL I associated him with appearing in more of the subdued and thoughtful type sketches than any other cast member aside from possibly Gilda Radner. It seems unlikely his brand would have plummeted quite as catastrophically as Ackroyd's or Chase's.

I went with The Blues Brothers, but Animal House became a comedy sub-genre all by itself.
I suspect he was always going to burn out, and if he hadn't of done so, I think he would have left the business. Because the only way he wasn't going to flame out spectacularly was to reach a point where he was comfortable being John Belushi, and not JOHN BELUSHI!!!

It pretty much has to be The Blues Brothers. He was good in everything he appeared in but that's his defining role.
I know he had the talent, but I don't see him going down the Bill Murray path (or even the Robin Williams path) into serious drama. He wouldn't have done a Lost In Translation or a Dead Poet's Society. He might've done the odd 'serious' thing but I think he mostly would've continued doing comedic stuff of some kind or another. I'd like to think he'd have ended up doing voices for some animated movies, or comedic guest appearances in action movies - essentially playing himself in them. He'd might have wound up in the kind of roles that Danny DeVito excelled in. I doubt he would've essentially vanished in the way that so many of his contemporaries seem to have done.

Blues Brothers for me.
In retrospect, Animal House is really an ensemble piece IMO.

Blues Brothers for me. I did enjoy Neighbors, though.

Blues Brothers. And, sadly, had he lived, I think he still would have burnt out. In his final season on SNL, there were episodes where it was obvious the drugs were affecting his performance. Had he managed to get clean, he certainly could have enjoyed a Robert Downey Jr.-type comeback, but who else besides Downey has ever managed to pull that off?
