Originally released in 1989, 'Sonic Temple' proved to be a pivotal moment for both band and the wider rock scene. The album catapulted The Cult into superstar status and remains their most commercially successful release to date. This 30th anniversary box set contains 53 tracks in total (including 6 previously unreleased), including the original album, along with various alternate edits, mixes, extended versions, acoustic versions and demos.

I remember hearing (and seeing) Fire Woman on MTV. I went out and bought the album the next day. I wasn't disappointed either. For me, the whole of side one was the best (Sun King, Fire Woman, American Horse, Edie (Ciao Baby) and Sweet Soul Sister).

Definitely in on this one.

I guess this album was a departure for them (fan-wise). I heard Love and Electric later on and they didn't do anything for me.

Electric is a classic rock album. Definitely a big favorite of mine.

Love and Electric are far better albums than this one IMO and Love is their best.

I like Sonic Temple to a degree, but Bob Rock’s huge production and the obvious move towards more of a Metal sound was rather calculated to me, and not true to the band’s real sound.

Agree on all fronts. I still play Love and Electric, but Sonic Temple hasn't seen my stereo in 29 years.

Back in my record store working days, I sold a ton of both Electric and Sonic Temple. And then Ceremony was released and that one just sat on the shelves. I see that Ceremony has been certified platinum just like Electric and Sonic Temple, and it almost seems hard to believe now. There just seemed to be zero buzz about that record.

I worked in a music store then as well, and my experience was the same as yours. When Ceremony came out, it was crickets. I never bought Ceremony myself, and back then I would pick up anything I had the slightest interest in. Actually, I still do that!

I thought Ceremony was better than its’ reputation.

It did have a few radio/MTV hits with “Wild Hearted Son” and “Heart of Soul” and a couple good ones such as “Earth Mofo”, “White” and “Indian.”

A major problem was how bloated it was and the drug intake was massive and Ian and Billy barely spoke to each other.

It’s still not a great album though.

I remember they were sued for $60 million for the album cover. Don’t remember how that turned out.

As for Sonic Temple, a 5 CD box set? Pass.

This has been pushed back to September 13th.
