I like it a lot. I know it's an acquired taste but it's worth seeing once. Spielberg treats it like a sort of 'art' film, not really explaining stuff outright but just hinting at most of it, which annoys a lot of people. All the actors in it are great, IMO. Dreyfuss is believable and oddly likeable as the tormented protagonist despite his obsessiveness (or perhaps because of it).
His performance as Roy is the key to the movie which is why I listed as my favourite. He manages to convey the heroic desperation the character requires. What he sees (but cannot explain) consumes him and he lets it, and then you have to decide for yourself if that's a good or bad thing. It's like a study regarding the nature of obsession. Roy's entire life collapses around him, and he doesn't really seem to care. He's driven to do what he does regardless of anyone or anything. His growing obsession overrides every other concern. I saw him as heroic when I was much younger. As I get older I see a lot of what Roy does as extremely selfish, but I still don't see what he does as being objectively bad or wrong.

Also, Chris would say Jaws. When he was working for Amazon a guy with a familiar name called for help getting his Kindle working. Chris was all pro, until the end when he had to go a little fan-boy and tell RD how much he loved him, especially in Jaws. Which I have still never seen.

You didn't see Dreyfuss as central to Close Encounters? I thought Roy's obsession was the point of the movie. He loses everything to achieve this almost impossible goal.

Close Encounters was huge when it came out. I knew people that liked it better than Star Wars. People were seeing Flying Saucers all over the place It is kind of odd that people don’t talk about it anymore. I’ll probably look at it again soon.
I'm going to get it on Blu-ray. I should watch it again. It has this dreamlike quality at times, then portrays a very lifelike realism that contrasts with that. It's an intriguing film to watch purely for the visuals and it's an example of a time when Spielberg was actually pushing himself creatively - there are a lot of ideas in it he'd use again in later movies, but this was the first time he went 'the full Spielberg' and I'm not sure if he knew it would work. He took a huge risk, career-wise, when he could've played it safe and just done another Jaws movie.

In his interview with Spielberg on Inside the Actors Studio, James Lipton suggested Close Encounters had another, more personal theme for Spielberg: "Your father was a computer engineer; your mother was a concert pianist, and when the spaceship lands, they make music together on the computer", suggesting that Roy Neary's boarding the spaceship is Spielberg's wish to be reunited with his parents.
