I shopped there once in 2006 and one of my first thoughts was "Jimbo would have a field day here."

And I believe a few years later he made the pilgrimage and saw it for himself.

Sad that they'll have to move, but I hope they find another location. It was a very cool place.

Amoeba Music Set to Be Torn Down, Replaced With Complex After L.A. Council Votes to Approve Zoning Changes

The John Ferraro Council Chamber at Los Angeles City Hall is hardly the most artistically expressive of places, but on Tuesday, the room played host to an event that will have real world consequences for generations of music fanatics.

The City Council voted to approve zoning changes that will clear the way for the development of a 26-story complex at the site of the Amoeba Music store at the corner of Sunset and Cahuenga boulevards in Hollywood. The move cements the fate of the distinctive building and fuels further speculation on the future of the city’s biggest record store.

Amoeba will be moving. Where to, however, remains anyone’s guess.

The retailer’s Hollywood location, which opened to great fanfare in 2001, has been in a kind of holding pattern since news of the possible development came to light a few years ago. The store sold the building to developer GPI Cos. in 2015 for $34 million.

Jesus, they won't stop these city council people. Faceless non-public infrastructure replacing active business/social historical iconic landmarks. I am personally getting really pissed and tired of it all.

Very sad!

I'm in L.A. for my annual summer visit with my folks, so I'll be sure to stop in at Amoeba while I'm here, in case the store's not around when I'm back over the holidays.

From Amoeba's Facebook page:

To All Concerned,

You may have read some new articles about the future of Amoeba in Los Angeles. Rest assured, we are NOT closing. We are going to be in the current location at 6400 Sunset Blvd for about another year, and from there we are planning to move to a new space in Hollywood. We have several exciting possibilities in Hollywood, and we’ll let everyone know when we have news to share.

Thank you for all your love, concern, and support. The LA community and music lovers from around the world have embraced us and enabled us to build and grow one of the greatest record stores in the world. This will be a new chapter for all of us and we’re looking forward to landing in our new spot in Hollywood.

Thanks Kym, I am starting to feel a little better now :-o , but not that much yet. :sigh:

I used to be a frequent visitor at the Tower Sunset Blvd location back in the mid 70's and I am not even over that yet. :ohno:

I am not good in letting go. Continuous work in progress.

I echo Rick in his thanks to Kym, his feeling a little better, and his remaining caution. I do hope Amoeba finds another good spot in Hollywood, one with--I won't hold my breath--easy, plentiful, and free parking.
