Echo In The Canyon celebrates the explosion of popular music that came out of LA’s Laurel Canyon in the mid-60s as folk went electric and The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas and the Papas gave birth to the California Sound. It was a moment (1965 to 1967) when bands came to LA to emulate The Beatles and Laurel Canyon emerged as a hotbed of creativity and collaboration for a new generation of musicians who would soon put an indelible stamp on the history of American popular music.
Featuring Jakob Dylan, the film explores the Laurel Canyon scene via never-before-heard personal details behind the bands and their songs and how that music continues to inspire today. Echo in the Canyon contains candid conversations and performances with Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys), Michelle Phillips (Mamas & the Papas), Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield), David Crosby (The Byrds), Roger McGuinn (The Byrds) their contemporaries Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash and slightly younger followers Jackson Browne and Tom Petty (in his last film interview) as well as contemporary musicians influenced by their music such as Beck, Fiona Apple, Cat Power, Regina Spektor and Norah Jones.
One of my music pals from the ship Fernando Perdomo of the Dave Kerzner Band is in this documentary playing with Jakob Dylan.

Not yet, but there's still time....
For those of you really interested in the Laurel Canyon/LA music scene of the era (both before and after the 60's) there is a really good book available.
"Canyon of Dreams (The Magic and the Music of Laurel Canyon)", by Harvey Kubernik with Foreward by Ray Manzarek, Afterward by Lou Adler.

I have this doc. in my library. Really good.
LEGENDS OF THE CANYON delivers the story of the advent of rock music spawned in the garden of the Hollywood Hills, Laurel Canyon. Many of rock music's legendary artists of the late 1960's brought to life the anthems of a generation in these hills.
Documentary / Director Jon Brewer Starring: David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash

Just saw the movie today at an art movie theater in Malverne NY and it truly is a must see for many of us. Lots interviews with people like Eric Clapton David Crosby Steven Stills Jackson Browne Tom Petty etc. The music is also done very well and yes it’s mostly Jakob Dylan with guests like Beck Cat Power Fiona Apple Jade etc.
And I got to see my Cruise To The Edge pal Fernando Perdomo who backs up Jakob in live concert and in the studio.
One of the highlights is seeing Michelle Phillips listening to the new version of Go Where You Wanna Go (feat. Jakob Dylan & Jade Castrinos) and she loves it, and it does sound good.
Don’t miss it at your local art theater.

This looks great, and I love what I've heard so far of Jakob Dylan's collaborations for the soundtrack. So cool that he covered songs like Buffalo Springfield's "Questions" and the Byrds' "What's Happening" rather than the usual hits. They're great examples of that sound.

My copy arrived today. I like this a lot. All of these are solid to great cover versions with just the right feel. They respect the originals without replicating them. Nicely done.

Saw the feature tonight and I really enjoyed it quite a bit. It's in very limited release across the country. Assume it will show up on DVD as soon as the theatrical release has had its run.

The DVD is out this week (9/10) and the CD is indeed all performances from the documentary. Many of the names listed did interviews only and did not perform.

Watched the documentary again over at a relatives home this time with my wife and they loved it. Such a great one and it still gives me chills to see such star power (and the late great Tom Petty). It makes you love music all over again.
