I play CDs so that I can listen to what I want to when I want to and where I want to.

It’s hard to believe that the CD will be the final ‘physical’ product in our lifetime and probably forever. We are the last to fully embrace it and collect them. The CD might as well be the vinyl disc now.

The CD might as well be the vinyl disc now. What? Released in limited runs and sold at ridiculous prices to aging boomers and young hipsters who rave about the quality benefits of having Snap, Crackle and Pop as backing musicians to the band you wanted to buy? Perish the thought. It's not that I'm a luddite; I just don't trust digital only media companies not to completely screw me by either changing the media formats, locking them out, or moving to a subscription based model. I'll happily pay $20 for a CD I want; I'm not paying $2 a month forever for the CD I want, and a whole lot of stuff I don't

While I’ve collected CDs since the 80s (almost 40 years now) and was there when they debuted the Perfect Sound Forever format in NYC, I also have fully embraced streaming too to fill in the blanks of my collection as I try and manage it from taking over my house (and not have to employ offsite storage units). I cherish portability at this stage in my life, i want music everywhere i go and streaming/ downloading helps that. Can’t take my big rig everywhere I go. For me it’s nothing to fear, I already have every CD I ever wanted as I used to say to Jimbo, I very happy with my collection, now is the time to enjoy it, the race is over.

I'm not that passionate about music and I never liked buying cds because there would only be a handful of songs I would really like. Theres only a handful of albums that I could listen all the way through without skipping songs. Streaming is a godsend to me for this reason because I can just listen to the music I want, and for free none the less. Youtube, Soundcloud, and Spotify is more than enough for me to enjoy tunes. And the only reason I got Spotify was for my podcast team which I share with one of my mates.

I despise the devaluation of music.

Let's end the thread on that note.
Not having read the article, I assumed it was in support of compact discs, but the discussion veered quickly into the usual morbidity of how physical media is yesterday and there's no new music worth buying and so on.
Our music boards should always be a safe haven for collectors who still love CDs, who still want physical formats, and aren't about to part with them or stop adding new ones to their collections. If you feel otherwise, that's fine, but don't bring it here.
