The last one timed out so it was time for a new improved thread! :)

Btw.... what are the three essential albums one must have for a solid Thin Lizzy collection. I've always been thin on Thin Lizzy. Of course had Jailbreak.
Any good comps?

Not sure if there is an essential comp out there, but I would definite recommend Black Rose: A Rock Legend if you're only going to own a handful of albums

There is an excellent 2 cd career spanning comp on Universal that came out about 10 to 12 years ago titled Greatest Hits. It even has a couple of Phil solo songs on it. It’s got a black cover and just says Thin Lizzy Greatest Hits in silver. It has I think 36 songs on it. It’s very inexpensive , last time I saw it on amazon it was under $13

OK, as everyone knows this is my favorite band.

The 2 CD Greatest Hits from 2004 is definitely the best comp out there, but the liner notes and credits are an embarrassment and if they had just asked me, I'd have fixed the 40 or 50 mistakes!

More extensive is the 3CD comp Collected which has rare tracks and hits and album cuts and covers the whole career of 1971-83.

It has b-sides and songs from both Phil solo albums.

If you spend a little more, choose this over Greatest Hits.

I'd recommend 2 to start: (though Pete has converted me & I'm pretty much catalog now)

Live & Dangerous

&

The 4 disc British box can be picked up pretty cheap if you watch for 3rd party sale prices. It's a great collection, & also is the best sounding TL I've heard on cd. Lowest price on Amazon UK right now is $29.46 including USA shipping from a seller with pretty bad feedback.

Thanks guys, some good choices here.

btw.....Jimbo and me did see Thin Lizzy open for Deep Purple many years ago at the Beacon Theater but alas Phil had passed by then. But they were very good!

Sadly, that box is very outdated now with all the remasters.

I highly, highly suggest the deluxe editions of every album as they were (mostly) well done.

The box set above is nice, and a good item to have though very little is rare now.

The mastering is very subtle and quite good.

There's also a nice, very cheap Lynott solo comp available.

If all you know of this band is "The Boys Are Back In Town", then I suggest you get their self titled first album and play the track "Return Of The Farmer's Son" at a dangerously high volume.

Now that I'm a completest I agree with Pete on the 2 disc remasters for the bonus tracks.

I still think the box is an ideal place to start, & I think it has better sound than the recent remasters.

That box has very nice sound.

The deluxes also sound great but the bonus cuts on Jailbreak and Johnny The Fox suck, especially the awful new remixes.

This is the best band...ever!

Phil Lynott’s mother, Philomena, has died.

Quote:
The mother of legendary Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott has died at the age of 88, it’s been confirmed.

Philomena Lynott passed away in Dublin on Wednesday morning after an extensive battle with cancer, Hot Press reports.

The Irish music publication previously published Philomena’s best-selling memoir My Boy, which told the story of Phil Lynott’s life from his early days in Manchester and Dublin, to his success as the frontman of the legendary rock band.

“She was a formidable and brilliant woman,” Hot Press editor Niall Stokes said. “I am really proud that we were able to participate in telling her remarkable story. Because she was indeed a remarkable woman.”

She was a great advocate for Phil, and from what I remember reading, was great to his fans.

RIP.
