Apparently Apple is doing away with iTunes and moving everything over to Apple TV. I have nearly 80,000 songs in iTunes. I’ve ripped all of my CDs lossless, and have an assortment of hi-res music in the AIFF format. It’s only a matter of time, perhaps a few years, before iTunes stops working as happens with most fazed out software. So assuming the new Apple Music doesn’t allow for your own music to be imported, or will even work on a windows desktop, I’ll be needing a new home for my music. Something that will play WAV, MP3, AAC, AIFF, and Apple Lossless. Perhaps FLAC as well.
I primarily listen to music on my Windows desktop with headphones. I have everything organized in my own way using the sorting tab (albums chronologically, etc.). So I’m looking for a program that allows me to organize my music, and plays all of the aforementioned formats. I’ve also imported all of the proper artwork, often upgrading the default image, and love that I can minimize the screen to just the album cover (and adjust the size) while playing music. And sometimes I stream the music to my Apple TV where it displays the artwork on the TV screen and plays through my home system.
Losing all of this is going to be a huge loss for what I’ve built over the past 20 years. I doubt there’s a program out there than can do all of the above. Any suggestions?

Interesting, I read in WSJ about 6 months back that this was going to happen, sure enough. They also announced a new IPOD model as well. Interesting things going on there at Apple these days. https://www.trustedreviews.com/news/ipo ... es-3652708

I have ripped my entire CD collection to FLAC plus about 30% to MP3 for the car and device's
I have everything filed on 4 x 6TB HDs in a NAS Drive Plus I have 2 x 4TB external drives to take around China.
I strongly believe CDs will definitely be taken over by digital files. Hense the idea of multiple backup for all your digital music files.
I spent 6 months checking every file and adding artwork as well. Labor of love

I have one final unopened never used IPOD that of course runs on iTunes. I would guess if its loaded it would be ok but one day it won't be able to update and that will be that. Shame, love my portable devices though lately I just use Apple Music on my iPhone 10 and stream right to my wireless headphones when I am at the gym or walking the dog.

I have never gone digital. I never have used iTunes.
Other than running out of space, I see no use for it. CD's work just fine.
Do I care if iTunes is no more? Nope.

We'll have to wait and see what is said at the conference Apple will have on June 3. I doubt they will abandon updates to ipods. From what Bloomberg is reporting, it looks like they will just split up music, movies and podcasts into their own apps. Bloomberg reported: i Tunes has been the way Apple users listen to music, watch movies and TV shows, hear podcasts, and manage their devices for almost two decades. This year, Apple is finally ready to move into a new era. The company is launching a trio of new apps for the Mac – Music, TV, and Podcasts – to replace iTunes. That matches Apple’s media app strategy on iPhones and iPads. Without iTunes, customers can manage their Apple gadgets through the Music app.

Word is that iTunes will be replaced by three new apps for the Mac, perhaps named Music, TV, and Podcasts, splitting up all the stuff that's been piled into iTunes over the years. Music may look different than iTunes, but will handle everything that you've added to your iTunes library over the years. I assume the iTunes music files will move automatically to the new app upon the installation of the Mac's updated operating system, MacOS 10.15, which should be released to the public in late September. If this is indeed all true there will be official news released Monday during the Apple World Wide Developers Conference keynote address this coming Monday June 3 at 10am Pacific, 1pm Eastern. Of course this all applies to Apple computers and devices. I have no idea how all this will apply to peecees.

[/i] Apple has just come out with a new 7th generation iPod, that also runs IOS, so it seems likely there will be some kind of migration avenue to the breakout music store, at least for awhile. The 6th generation came out in 2015, and my feeling was this current generation was a bit of a surprise because of the projected demise of iTunes.

I use IPod nanos. They'll probably be useless thanks to this. I better start adjusting what I want on it since it will become permanent.

I hope I can retain my uploaded music and carefully curated playlists. I wish they'd keep music and podcasts together.
Couldn't care less about video.
I love my 9 year old iPod classic.

I'm not currently in the market for a new iPod, but was always worried that I wouldn't be able to find a new one with the storage capacity that I would want. Nice to see there is a 256 Gb version in this generation. Phones just don't work for me. I don't have any extra app's on my cell, just the operating system and whatever is added during the routine software updates, and just checked and my phone has 48.7 GB free. That's just not enough space for the amount of music I would want to put on it. On the old 256 GB iPod that I have, I there is nearly 1100 albums on it.

It makes sense to me to keep all the audio together: music, podcasts, audiobooks, since it's all just stuff that I listen to. But maybe they'll want to expand upon some features in a separate app for each? Audiobooks would be nice, for instance, if they also displayed the book text as it was being read. Podcasts might want to reference still images as part of a presentation, etc.
In any event, I'll continue to keep several older versions of iTunes on my computers so that they can continue to talk with my old iPods as needed.

I'd be stunned if there's not a way to import music (ripped, MP3s, downloads, etc.) into the new Music app. I'm just hoping the new app will run on my older Mac (although this won't be much of a concern if I do end up getting a new one) and that it will load to older devices. I still have an 80G iPod classic, although it's seen better days - I had to have the headphone jack replaced a couple years ago, and there are issues with the screen. I bought a new 128G Touch last year to prepare for the iPod dying (and because it had been rumored that the Touches were going away, and I didn't want to miss out like I did on the 160G iPod). Never did set it up w/the older stuff. Now I want the 256G Touch to try to put all my stuff on one device.
If nothing else, I'm sure someone will come up with more third party apps to load to these devices. I do wish Apple had made this stuff easier (although I suspect a lot of it was pushed on them by the labels) - as much as I love my IPod, it was never as easy or user-friendly as my old Creative Zen. The Zen had much more flexibility for playing back stuff, and I could operate it by touch alone. It just didn't have anywhere near enough capacity.

I only use my iPod Classic for certain things like exercising or driving, but I dread when it dies. I have 20,000 songs on it. I don't stream, ever.

This old guy has found out he loves streaming via Apple Music. I was just showing my wife how I can stream any song thru Bluetooth from my iPhone 10 into our truck as we drove over to see Rocketman. And yes it was some EJ music and it sounds glorious in the Jeep. For instance the sound inside Chipotle was dreadful compared to the sound in the vehicle.
A wonderful music development for people who need portability.

Do I care if iTunes is no more? Nope. I 100% agree with this post. I don’t give a shit. My CDs will be my way of music until I’m as crusty as Abe Vigoda’s underwear. Well, maybe not that crusty.

What annoys me is how anything intended to be played over a computer eventually becomes useless. Those cool old Bob Dylan/Pete Townshend CD-ROM's? They might work, if you can download a Windows '98 "emulator". The complete 1950's Playboy archive on DVD-ROM? The software needs a patch, which the software company yanked from the internet so that Playboy could charge a monthly subscription fee to look at these issues that I thought I "owned". Windows Media Player hasn't played DVD's for a few years now, and I would bet I have at least 100 DVD's which have a menu screen with a direct link to some website or some other way to access online content that no longer exists. This is why I'm skeptical when Amazon allows me to "buy" a movie but not actually download it, with the promise that I will be able to watch "my movie" as often as I wish until the end of time or something. (And don't get me started on those bastards at Roku.)
I'm all for new technology, but when that new technology is purposely incompatible with old technology, I get annoyed. As for iTunes--I just worry about those "exclusive bonus tracks" that have never appeared on CD; if I remember the fine print, I'm only permitted to reload my iTunes purchases to one or two more computers or laptops or "devices" or whatever.
