Because nothing says "I believe in the spirit of '69 and am rejecting materialism" like buying a box set for $799.98.

There are going to be smaller, more sensible editions -- click here to see the separate thread on our Vaults board -- but it's not yet clear if those other configurations will go into general release. If so, Amazon's prices will be better than buying direct from Rhino. (Unless you're a true Woodstock hippie and want the $800 box, which is a Rhino exclusive.)

As a collector, I think it's cool that this is going to exist. I can't afford it, and I certainly don't know if this is something I'd want even if I could, but as someone with the collector's mentality it's great that we'll actually be able to have all of the tracks. In that context it's disappointing that it won't be truly complete because of the three missing tracks

Of course, the big question is - how many of the people who do buy this will listen, or make an honest attempt to listen, to all of the tracks.

It's a tragedy Experience Hendrix won't add the missing songs because they are actually very good and deserve to be on the big box as played on the day.

Yeah, it's a shame that the Hendrix estate doesn't see the bigger picture.

I heard a podcast a few weeks back in which the guy who has assembled the "Complete Woodstock" set described a set proposed for the 40th anniversary--something like thirty-something discs which included a couple of discs with nothing but various stage announcements and radio bulletins. (NOTE: This ever-growing audio archive bootleg set has been available via filesharing for years.)

I guess the question is the use of the phrase "near complete reconstruction" in the Rhino ad. I would guess that at least one artist has declined release of...something.

Hendrix estate apparently vetoed 2 songs sung by Larry Lee.

One Sha Na Na tune will be missing. There was a tape glitch. I think Jailhouse Rock is the tune that is missing.

$800 is too much for me.

I'd love both the complete Canned Heat set and the complete (less 1) Sha Na Na set.

Wish we could get a complete Monterey Pop.

The pricing is frustrating. The causal fan gets to purchase the three-disc version at $11.67 per disc, the bigger fan has to buy the ten-disc version for $15 per disc, and the complete 38-disc version is going for $21 per disc. I would be in for $400, but not $800.

IMO, this version is way too expensive, & the song selection on the 10 disc is "meh".

There is a gray area release with most of it running around.

Anyone want to bet that within 18 months of this release Rhino will be selling the complete sets individually for, I'm going to say, more than half the acts?

That would work for me! We already have complete sets for 6 or 7 on official releases.

I used to think it would be fun to listen to the entire festival "as it happened" but those were the thoughts of a younger man with a lot more free time than I have now. I might be in for some of the individual sets but that will depend on what's available when those actually come out. Like others have said, though, I'm glad that this thing is going to exist.

Track listing has finally gone up for these. It appears that efforts were made to fit each artist onto a single disc, so even Quill and Sha Na Na get their own disc, even though the track times indicate they played closer to a half-hour and an hour. I don't think John Sebastian played even as long as a half-hour, yet he gets his own disc--it appears to be fluffed out by a couple of stage announcements, and maybe the between-song banter is now unedited. On the other hand, I've heard a bootleg of the Grateful Dead's set which preserves intact something like a half-hour of technical difficulties; I'm glad that appears to be, at minimum, edited. Also--the final disc appears to be a spoken-work/stage announcement montage.

Everything but the Hendrix set has been remixed this past year and mastered with great care by Dave Schultz.
If you're like me, it's the music that matters and if it's been upgraded with care by professionals that know this material.
