Hey folks - I thought I'd put up a thread that had links to all the colouring tips and crits I've been doing, kind of a one-stop place for those looking for any pointers from me. I'll update this as I do more of these - people seem to enjoy having me mercilessly tear apart their colouring for some reason...

Some Crits for Gerry - Avengers - colour theory, plane separation, some ideas on energy colours

Some Crits for Gerry - X-Men - colour theory, separating different planes in a drawing, very simple shadow tips

Some Crits for Hugh - Mary Marvel - mostly simple modeling tips

Some crits for Yvette - bathtime - more modeling tips, talking about how shadows fall

Heeere's Cap (for coloring) - multiple light source modeling, coloured sidelights

Help with coloring Iron Man - modeling metal, multiple light source modeling

Hotties kissing - critiques for Judge WAN - working with flaming characters, colour holds

Colouring questions for Ian - not a crit thread, but here I'm answering questions about colouring

Colouring Work-In-Progress - Doctor Strange and Baron Mordo - A step-by-step guide and examination of how I go about colouring a commission (in this case, one for Gerry Turnbull). There is also a brief tutorial on how to do colour holds.

Colouring DEFENDERS - another step-by-step guide of the process to colour another piece for Gerry, this one of The Defenders.

Avengers for Gerry - step by step - another step-by-step guide to colouring, talking about dealing with multiple characters with the same colour. Also, more discussions about colour holds.

Colouring Doctor Strange - Step by Step - another step-by-step to colouring, this time with a Doctor Strange piece drawn by Joe Rubinstein.

***

Here are some threads of my own work as well, both Work-In-Progress/Instructional threads and also ones just displaying my artwork:

Tomb of Dracula #44 - portfolio-piece-in-progress - colouring! - My recolouring of issue #44 of Tomb of Dracula as a portfolio/submission piece.

The Sentinel - Work-in-Progress - The breakdown and process of my illustration of a fantasy piece.

Iron Man Movie Poster - Work-in-Progress - The breakdown and process of my illustration of my concept for a made-in-1965 Iron Man Movie Poster.

Angelic Warrior Work-in-Progress - The breakdown and process of my illustration Angelic Warrior.

Vampirella Work-In-Progress - The breakdown and process of my illustration Vampirella, talking about the pencils-to-colour process used on it.

Ian's Sketches - An ongoing thread of my sketches, both small ones for sale and just for playing around with ideas.

Ian Sokoliwski, professional comic book colourist - examples of my more finished work, including a lot of my colouring the lineart of other artists. Nothing new will be added to this thread, as it has been superseded by Ian's NEW illustration and colouring thread - hotlinks only!

Ian's photography - examples of my heavily-edited photography, as well as a few shots by others that I then edited as well. More about photo retouching rather than any quality about the photographs themselves (I in no way consider myself any sort of photographer). As with the above art thread, nothing new will be added to this thread any longer, as it has been superseded by Ian's NEW Photography thread - hotlinks only!

Dark Angel - Process - this is a breakdown of one of my Gothic Photos, with a rough guide as to how I put it together. It isn't on IMWAN, but instead on my photo blog, but I thought it was still worth posting.

Wow, these are cool! I know zilch about computer coloring beyond flat colors, and I doubt I have the patience (or the tools) to learn, but these little tutorials are very fun and informative. Most coloring in today's comics seems over-colored to the point of distracting from the artwork, but something I noticed a couple years back when I saw some of your work over Bob Layton commissions is that you enhance the artwork, not overpower it. I like that, and I bet Bob does, too.

Thanks, Roger - I do talk a little bit about modern colouring and why it quite often doesn't work in that Colouring questions for Ian thread (that I just added my first post here). I like to think that I'm not getting in the way of the artwork, but helping to tell the story :)

Ian, how would you feel about a simple how to thread?
pick an image and talk us though each stage?
if you had the time and the inclination, that would be something to see . .

I've been thinking about doing that, Gerry - a more detailed version of my 'Work-In-Progress' threads. Perhaps with something I'll be working on in the next couple of weeks... ;)

I've added in two Work-In-Progress threads, as well as my sketches and professional artwork threads. Plus changed up the name of this thread a little bit.

And added one more Work-In-Progress thread. I hope nobody minds me using this stickied thread to pimp my own work this much.

Pimpin' ain't easy, after all
