So I saw a fella on eBay selling an Essential Spider-Man volume. Just one volume. Starting bid, $10 ... and shipping? $10. Ten bucks!

Wow, $20 total for your used Spider-Man Essential?

It would actually be cheaper to get it from AmazWAN with second day shipping, brand new, rather than his used copy. And I wouldn't be getting ripped off on shipping.

I mail comics. I know how much it costs to ship comics. Ten bucks for a single essential? Give me a break. Even if you factor in buying a brand new bubble mailer and shipping Priority (he's shipping Parcel Post), that's DOUBLE what it should cost. That's not a small degree of padding, that's robbery.

So as I am prone to do when I see stuff like this, I sent him a note:
Quote:
I noticed there is a typo in your auction for this item. You list the shipping as $10, which is of course completely absurd, and therefore clearly a typographical error. What is the ACTUAL shipping for this item?

His response?
Quote:
It's a heavy book, and the only thing I changed was from $10 shipping to $7. That's the best I can do. The Post Office doesn't accept comic books as Media Mail, only textbooks.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!

One, no, it's not a heavy book. Those Essentials are quite light for their size, thanks to the cheap paper. They'e no heavier than a somewhat thick TPB.

Two, no, $7 is not the best you can do. That price is still padded by at least two bucks, even taking into consideration materials and such. Couple that $7 with the $10 starting big, and again, it would be cheaper to buy it brand new!

And finally, the post office DOES accept comic books as media mail. Only texbooks? Talking out of his ass. Not 48 hours before getting this message, when mailing out some comics of my own, the postman asked, "Is this a book?" "No, comics," I said. "Did you want to send this media mail?" he asked. (I didn't.)

This dude is an idiot.

(No, no plans to respond further.)

Heh, I've bought shoes on ebay and the shipping is $10, and they're a lot heavier!

Yeah, padded shipping has turned me off of more than a few auctions.A single comic, or a CD shipping for 5 bucks or more...

And no, I don't need it overnighted!

Even worse? Padded shipping costs that don't show up in the "premium" shipping.

I've paid top price for shipping, only to find that the person tossed the item into a flimsy envelope, paid a quarter of the shipping price to mail it, and didn't bother to package the item in a way that would avoid damage.

Yep, nothing worse than paying "Priority" and having it show up a week or two later Parcel Post, Media Mail or something other than Priority.

Some of these eBay guys like charging extra for the "handling". That's packaging the stuff, and making a trip to the post office to you and me. They probably shouldn't do it (price of doing business), and if they do, it should only amount to a dollar per parcel, at best. My experience with the post office is that it depends on who you get at the counter. Most regular comic books are periodicals and contain ads (even old ass comics with ancient ads fall in this category), and some PO employees won't let you ship them media mail due to a strict adherance to the rules, but if you just say they're "books", which they technically are, most won't ask any questions. Tpbs and essential volumes should totally qualify as "books", because they aren't periodicals and don't contain any ads, so they should have no problem being sent media mail.

When I sell stuff on Ebay, I charge for Priority Mail AND Delivery Confirmation(if it's in the US). Depending on the size of the package, I may have to charge 7.50 for shipping(If it's more than 10 books at once) 6 books or less goes easily in a FREE Priority Mail envelope(even with Cardboard around it), and these get charged 5.00.

I sold a lot of used books on Amazon and used media mail. That book should cost $2.68 before the last postal increase.

One other thing? You could be cautioning yer fellow IMWANkers by listing the seller's name here. Since the shipping info is fair and open to public viewing...

You could offer up GOOD sellers as well, here.

I once bought a book on eBay from an American seller and went with the cheapest shipping option. It arrived (IIRC) about two months later. My guess is that the package crossed the Atlantic in a row boat...

I have never experienced any issues shipping comics and related materials media mail. I have overcharged on shipping, my guess was too high, but I refunded the buyer $4.00 through paypal, took about ten seconds. When I shop ebay, for the best Buy It Now price, I always check shipping costs, to find the real lowest price.

i'm so fed up with cases like the one mentioned by taft, that i've purchased ALL my online tpbs' off of amazon sellers in the last 6 months.. even if the price is sliiiightly more, the steady shipping costs & reliability of delivery level it out far in amazons corner...

infact, i only use ebay to buy nostaligic stuff these days, theres a comic store down the road for ongoings, & i have a regular dealer i see for back issues anyway

Something else....a lot of sellers use the high shipping to recoup their ebay fees (insertion and final value). Worst thing is that ebay doesn't give a damn about those high shipping charges. They have already gotten their cut from their fees, so it really doesn't matter to them.

Arvid, you chose "economy" shipping, and you're actually almost spot on. They go in a mailbag and ride on a ship, and take 4-6 weeks, minimum, depending on where they're going. The new USPS rates are doing away with that option though, and everything shipped internationally is going to be some type of airmail now.

I dunno about recently, but they did do a periodic sweep and send out little reminder emails, cautioning members who appear to be charging too much. They do say "Caveat emptor" all OVER the place, however, so they remind people to be reasonable and responsible.

I was interested in some nifty Mah Jonng sets, made in China and exported here directly off of eBay (I haven't seen too many in stores). Well, they're like $45 and $75 shipping!!
My wife and I did buy her parents a "pachislo" from Hong Kong or somewheres; itsa big LOUD slot machine and it was something like $90 shipping, but it was HUGE and heavy and international in the worst way. It got here quick, though!

That's a good suggestion.

Here is the auction. You can see he trimmed his shipping price.

Here is the seller.
