Description
Linda Ronstadt released more than two dozen studio albums during a stellar career that has spanned more than five decades. Surprisingly, during all that time, the legendary singer never released a live album. That will finally change with an upcoming album that features amazing performances from a concert that Ronstadt recorded in 1980 for her acclaimed HBO television special. LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD will be available on February 1 from Rhino.

Recorded on April 24, 1980 at Television Center Studios in Hollywood, the concert captures Ronstadt at the peak of her reign as America's most popular female rock singer. For LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD, Ronstadt selected 12 of her favorite performances from the original concert.

In concert, she was joined by an outstanding band that included guitarists Kenny Edwards and Danny Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel, bassist Bob Glaub, keyboardist Billy Payne (of Little Feat fame), pedal steel guitarist Dan Dugmore, and backing vocalist Wendy Waldman. Rounding out the band was Peter Asher - Ronstadt's producer and the concert's executive producer - who played percussion and sang background.

On stage, Ronstadt held the packed audience spellbound with powerful renditions of her biggest hits - "Blue Bayou," "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" and "It's So Easy" - plus an incredible, previously unreleased six-minute jam of her #1 smash, "You're No Good." The concert also showcased a trio of Top Ten hits from Ronstadt's then-current album - Mad Love - with performances of "I Can't Let Go," "How Do I Make You" and "Hurt So Bad." After its release in February 1980, Mad Love would become Ronstadt's seventh consecutive platinum-selling album.

John Boylan - who produced LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD - says the album almost didn't happen because HBO, Ronstadt, and her record label, Warner Bros., could not initially find the master tapes. It was a rink-side conversation with a Warner Bros. audio engineer at their sons' hockey practice that would finally lead him to the missing tapes. In the album's liner notes, he writes: "I have no way of calculating the odds of finding the lost tapes through a chance encounter at a hockey practice, but they must be astronomical - like winning the lottery. And in this case of remarkable serendipity, every Linda Ronstadt fan is a lottery winner."

There've been a good number of European live Linda (2) CDs over the last few years. It'll be great to have one that's official.

Based on the cover design & lettering, maybe "Mad Love" (1980) era?

I suspect that it's the audio special to the HBO concert (which I have as a "gray-market" disc). It's a good show but the ones with Andrew Gold were better

Momo...you are correct if it's the same show. She was using the "Mad Love" band: Russ Kunkle, Billy Payne, Bob Glaub, Dan Dugmore plus Danny Kortchmar and Kenny Edwards and Wendy Waldman

That band is chock full of excellent musicians. Hoping for an equally excellent track list.

And I saw 2 of those musicians last week in NYC, Kortchmar and Russ Kunkel. Consummate pros.

I remember seeing promos for this concert on HBO when I was visiting a relative. Unfortunately, it wasn't airing until the following weekend, by which time I was back at my HBO-less home. At this point in my life I'd rather see an official release of Keeping Out of Mischief (her unreleased, jazzier first try at a standards album) but maybe this is a sign that she's opening up the vaults. Fingers crossed.

I had it posted in the Concerts 2018 thread (and 2018 is almost over). They played with the Immediate Family, a collection of musicians that have been heard on thousands of songs by people like Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and so many others.

Waddy Watchell is the leader of the band. Russ the drummer, Danny on guitar and vocals, Leland Sklar on bass, Steve Postell also on guitar and vocals.

they used to call themselves 'the section' actually had 3 albums (very difficult to get on CD, it took me years).

they are extremely good.

thanks for this john, i had no idea this existed, i will watch for them.

any CD's released?

a conservative rough guess would be that i have at least 300 - 500 CD's that one or more of these guys played on.

The Danny Kortchmar Immediate Family is available in Japan on cd. I picked up a copy via ebay....some are new versions of songs he's done before. Solid music.

Was Waldman doing anything other than back up vocals?
