Description
The classic third album by the Moody Blues, 1968’s In Search Of The Lost Chord, will be released in a 50th anniversary deluxe edition on 2 November. It will feature bonus and previously unissued material and alternate mixes of this key record in the group’s storied catalogue.

The deluxe edition will comprise a 3CD/2DVD box set with both the original and new stereo mixes of the album. Unreleased material includes a never-before-heard mono version of the Ray Thomas song ‘Legend Of A Mind,’ as well as a live session from influential Radio 1 DJ John Peel’s Top Gear show and another from Afternoon Pop Show. Mono mixes of the related Deram A and B-sides are also included.

The first DVD in the package contains In Search of the Lost Chord in 96kHz/24-bit 5.1 Surround, as a new stereo mix and the original stereo mix. The second, visual, DVD comprises BBC TV’s Colour Me Pop: In Search of the Lost Chord, broadcast on 14 September 1968, two months after the album’s release; Ce Soir On Danse: The Moody Blues, broadcast by ORTF French TV on 13 July that year, and Carte d’Or’ – ORTF French TV, from 29 October 1968. Both of the French broadcasts are previously unreleased.

The set also includes a 76-page book with extensive sleeve notes by its compiler, Mark Powell, as well as a generous selection of rare photos and memorabilia images.

In Search of the Lost Chord, based around the concept of the spiritual and philosophical concerns of the psychedelic era, is seen by many Moody Blues devotees as the group’s masterpiece. It featured the much-loved singles ‘Voices In The Sky,’ written by Justin Hayward, and ‘Ride My See-Saw,’ by fellow frontman John Lodge, among compositions by all five members of the band. The album reached No. 5 in the UK and No. 23 in the US.

This is the only album that they didn't issue in multi-channel due to the inability to find the multi-tracks. That may have been rectified. I'm so in for this. And with all the bonus, this can be the best Moody's set ever. :yay:

Apparently Jakko Jakszyk remixed this album into 5.1
I have not been impressed with his remixing style compared to Steven Wilson.
Those ELP remixes still rattle a lot of fans including me.
But I need to give the guy another chance. :?

The only remix by Jakko I've heard is King Crimson's THRAK but thought he did a good job on it.

I am confused about the 5.1 Surround mix on the first DVD. There is no mention of DTS or Dolby. If you blow up the picture, it actually says DVD Audio on the disk. Will this require a DVD Audio player to access? Thanks in advance for any clarification.

Disc Four (DVD1) is a normal DVD with just audio content. It's not a "DVD Audio" disc per se, and it will work on a standard DVD player. The "DVD Audio" logo is being used more and more to denote any DVD that contains only audio with no video.

Thanks Linda. You have alleviated one concern. My blu ray player should be fine. However, I have an older Surround Sound receiver with no HDMI input, only optical. Therefore, if the surround sound mix is LPCM lossless, as I understand it, I cannot play it back. If it is DTS or Dolby, I can.

The previous release in this series (Days Of Future Passed) included both DTS and Dolby versions of the 5.1 surround mix, so we can probably assume that this will too.

The reviews for the 5.1 mix have been scathing. I don't own it personally due to the postage issues to China but many people in the Quad forum are absolutely furious with the lame attempt of a surround mix. Apparently they simply changed the volume of the seperate channels and added this into the surround mix which means basically there is no immersive sound. I saw the wave files and it's obvious that each channel is the same just at different dB

It sounds like they just took the quad mix and upmixed it to 5.1. Lame.

If I want that, I can just listen to stereo upmixed by my receiver.

I listened to my original vinyl of this (happens to be a Canadian pressing) today. Very enjoyable, but I decided that it's all I need - especially given how many other deluxe editions I've been getting this fall....

I simply cannot believe that the single CD version is just a remaster, not the remix. Hoffman Forum comments so far are saying the remix is nothing special, I just can't justify paying for all the stuff in the box...
