Description
Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a 4CD clamshell boxed set by PFM, “The Manticore Studio Albums 1973 – 1977”. PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI, better known in English speaking countries as PFM, were arguably the finest Italian Progressive rock band of the 1970’s and certainly one of the most well known. A successful act in their home land, they came to international attention when they signed to EMERSON, LAKE and PALMER’s label MANTICORE in 1973, recording a series of albums with English lyrics, some penned by ELP and KING CRIMSON lyricist PETE SINFIELD. Over the next four years they released four studio albums for the label, PHOTOS OF GHOSTS, THE WORLD BECAME THE WORLD, CHOCOLATE KINGS and JET LAG.

This clamshell boxed set gathers these four albums in replica album sleeve wallets and also includes a new poster. It is a fine celebration of the band’s studio work for the Manticore label.

In, very in.

And in Italian too.

These guys truly were the Italian ELP and had some great albums and a few of them made the US charts.

Highly recommended!

Damn it. I don't know anything about this band, but I thought to myself "if Rick is interested in this, then I must check it out."
Guess I'm spending more money :-)

Hey Dean, I saw them open for ELP. Good 70's Prog, I have some their CD's and of course LP's from back in the day.

These two were my favorite's:

Their third record.

You can find some of the late 90's Italian import CD's really cheap, under $5.00. Could be a way to check them out.

Rick, are you familiar with their debut album "Storia di un Minuto"? I have had a few people tell me it's PFM's best, but I don't know it at all.

Good Morning Jason Michael, actually I do not. If it is rated that high by it's fans then it must be good. I'll keep my eye out for it.

It's not in English, but it is excellent.

A mix of Prog, Hard Rock and bits of Folk and Classical.

The second album, Per un Amico is also brilliant and highly regarded.

Photos of Ghosts, is actually the US version of Per un amico, and it's a better album to me and more appealing.

Pete Sinfield began writing lyrics for the band in English (new lyrics, not translations), but this only lasted a few albums before they ditched him, not caring for his style.

This box highlights the four studio albums in English, and they are all great, especially Jet Lag which saw them venture towards Jazz Fusion.

It's a shame the live album PFM Cook isn't included as that was their biggest US seller.

They also appeared on The Midnight Special in the US and Old Grey Whistle Test in the UK and a DVD of that would've been a cool inclusion.

In any case, I'm getting this box.

Thanks for the info. That sounds really good. I have no problem listening to songs in other languages. And with prog there are usually lots of other things to listen for.

Big PFM fan, first heard songs from Photos of Ghosts on the radio in San Antonio in 1973, saw them there a few years later opening for Dave Mason (weird combination, my friends and I came for PFM, everybody else was there for Dave Mason). Have all the English and Italian language versions, lots of live stuff, etc.; what's strange is the fact that Esoteric just released these four albums a few years ago, remastered with bonus tracks, but these versions have no bonus tracks. I already had all the albums, but bought the new ones for the bonus tracks. Esoteric usually does a great job of remastering, but some of these didn't sound as good as previous CD releases. Jet Lag was an exception, because the old CD sounded horrible. I'll echo previous recommendations for the Italian versions, including the first album, which has no English version. Esoteric also released a 3-CD version of their live album "Cook" a few years ago, which shows off how these guys smoked live.

Sounds like The Blues Brothers performing at Bob's Country Bunker
